Tuesday, June 14, 2016, 7 pm at Cabbagetown Community Center
Meeting conducted by Katherine Dirga. Minutes recorded by Jocelyn Chen Wise.

  1. Announcements

Quarterly board meeting will be in July and is open to the public. Date and time will be announced soon.
2. Natalyn Archibong, Councilmember

There will be a movie shown in Cabbagetown Park on Sat, June 25, Natalyn is open to suggestions on the movie. She is working with new water commissioner to recommend against building a water tower in the middle of Holtzclaw. Residents created a list of 14 broken water meter covers will be sent to Natalyn. The Renew Atlanta Bond Fund is looking at sidewalks and utility poles to be replaced on Tye Street. The penny sales tax will be partly used for storm water drainage improvement, please send complaints to Natalyn so she can share with the committee. There is a push to hire more street sweepers because there are 15 sweeper machines and only 10 drivers. Resident reports frequent flat tires on Powell due to nails in the street, possibly due to construction dumpster on Powell near Memorial. Resident states that Iswald doesn't seem to get swept. Let Natalyn know about street sweeping needs. Resident reported a code violation on the south end of Tye near Memorial, overgrowth of shrubbery. Memorial Drive street signs were removed and don't appear to have been replaced. Wylie near Short to Estoria has been hot spot for crime, residents requested more lighting. Natalyn can have a lighting assessment done by community policing, which works with GA Power. Send Natalyn an email and she will set up a tour with public works and GA Power for ride-around lighting assessment.

3. Atlanta Police Department (Zone 6 Precinct, Lt. Floyd)

There was a carjacking on May 24 on Hardee Street, car was later found on Hilliard in Auburn Ave area. One residential burglary, a couple of shed break-ins, vehicle break-ins, auto thefts. No real pattern/trend. Vehicle break-ins have been crimes of opportunity. Usually see an uptick in crime when school is out, officers are enforcing curfews of 10 pm for persons under 18 years old. Keep cars clean and remove your weapons from the car to your home – criminals are stealing guns from cars.

4. 21st Century STEM Academy, Glen Delk

Scheduled to open in August across street from Emory University. Will be a private micro school, K-8, 80-120 students, focused on science technology engineering math. Will offer after school, day and summer camps. Next year, plan to open a charter school in Doraville. Will be opening a charter school in Brookhaven, K-12. Governor's state goal is to get 60% of high school students to get a 4 year college - currently it is 9% (2% for minorities). Emulating model of High Tech High in San Diego, which has 88% college graduation rate. See 21stcenturystem.academy

Property Tax Consultant, Andy Goldstein

Will be receiving annual notices of assessment for property tax, can appeal property value within 45 days. Can file online, send a certified letter. County is still processing appeals from 2015. Will receive 30 day letter, advises homeowner to deny the county appraiser's value. Board of Equalization will allow you to present. Freezes value of home for 3 years. Consultant will do this all for you. Now is also a good time to check for Homestead Exemptions.

5. Financial Report

End of May balance was $8,207.62. There are still two months of ads that need to be invoiced.

Expenses in May include $750 on permitting and security for Reunion, $250 for Quickbooks renewal. $920 was deposited today.
6. Committee and Other Reports
Public Safety/Neighborhood Watch (Peyton Stinson)

Biggest issue is car break-ins, please keep cars clean! Recently there were 3 car break-ins on Powell and some on Carroll. Will follow up with city on better lights on Wylie. For those who have been victims of crimes, Peyton can connect you to a volunteer counselor who can work with you. Encourage residents to leave porch lights on at night. Looking to start up some neighborhood “porch parties” to show a presence. Call 911 when you see anyone suspicious. You can Google Atlanta Police Zone 6 to see the Crime Map and statistics.
