Job Title: KTP Research Associate – Geospatial Mobile Mapping Engineer


Theme: Advanced infrastructure scanning and monitoring



Salary: £27,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience. Plus significant personalized training and development package worth around £10,000.
Project: Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP):
School/Department: Nottingham Geospatial Institute, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Nottingham with 3D Laser Mapping Limited
Contract: 38 hours per week (full-time), this post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 33 months.
Location: Bingham, Nottinghamshire and Jubilee Campus, University of Nottingham
1. Job purpose:

The objective of the project is to design, develop and implement an advanced mobile scanning system to monitor railway, road and mining infrastructure conditions.


2. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Gain thorough understanding of GNSS characteristics in poor visibility areas

  • Develop detailed understanding of mobile LiDAR data from repeat surveys

  • Undertake review of state of the art mobile GNSS processing techniques

  • Design laboratory program to generate Experimental Data Archive

  • Capture experimental data

  • Develop and test preferred processing techniques of repeat surveys

  • Design and develop automated GNSS processing and geospatial data integration solution

  • Testing of new solutions with key 3DLM customers

  • Evaluate the performance of the Alpha version with key customers and develop the Beta version

  • Write reports and publish the R&D findings in journals and magazines

  • Soft launch of new product


3. Special Conditions:

Whilst the position will be based at the company’s head office in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, the Associate must be prepared to travel within the UK to stakeholder and client partners. The Associate will also be expected to spend some time working at the University of Nottingham.

Education

  • PhD or equivalent in Engineering Surveying, Space Geodesy, Geomatics, Transport Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or in relevant Engineering subjects (1)

Experience

  • Experience and understanding of positioning and navigation technologies, location and sensing techniques, sensor integration and advanced positioning algorithms, big data analysis.(1,2,3)




  • Necessary programming skills in C++ or other platforms (1,2,3)




  • Relevant industrial experience (including work placements or sponsorship) in an engineering environment (1,3)




  • Relevant experience in GNSS and open source software platforms (1,2,3)




  • Experience in publishing research in high quality journals and presenting in key international conferences (1,3)

  • Ubiquitous positioning and navigation technologies, handle big data and crowd sourced information and effective implementation skill to change ideas into practice (1,3)
