Instructor: Mr. Antonuzzo, MAEd

Assignment: South Park® Character

Your Name:______________________________________________________

Assignment Description:

Students will build on their knowledge of tools within the Photoshop® toolbox and apply the Posterize and Cutout filters to much of their design work. Students will also learn about Levels.

Assignment Goals:

Students will build a South Park® character by using: SP-STUDIO.DE

Students will learn how to screen capture imagery

Students will learn how to make real photographic imagery appear to be a cartoon

Students will apply their skills of pasting and paste into commands

Students will utilize the magic wand tool for editing

Materials Required:

  • World Wide Web

  • SP-STUDIO.DE

  • Photoshop®

  • A Creative Mind

Process:

  1. In South Park® animation, an American animated television series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for the Comedy Central television network---Parker and Stone, who met in college, developed the show from two animated shorts they created in 1992 and 1995. The duo were united by their love of Monty Python, whose dark humor, surrealism, and absurdity is a major influence on South Park.[5] The latter became one of the first Internet viral videos, which ultimately led to its production as a series. South Park debuted in August 1997 with great success, consistently earning the highest ratings of any basic cable program. Subsequent ratings have varied, but the show remains Comedy Central's highest rated and longest running program. Originally produced by cutout animation, each episode is now created with computer software that emulates the show's distinct style. Episodes are typically written and produced during the week preceding its broadcast, with the vast majority of shows being written, directed, and acted by Parker and Stone. After the first couple of seasons, Parker became the only credited director, and the only writer for the majority of the past four seasons. As of 2011[update], a total of 217 episodes have aired during the show's fifteen seasons. Students will design a character using: SP-STUDIO.DE

  2. After designing their animated character (remember school policy-no imagery that deals with sex, drugs, violence or imagery that may be offensive to other people or race, creed, nationality or orientation) students will “print screen” the image and paste the completed character(s) into a letter formatted page.

  3. Students will choose a background using a photographic image from a search engine. (*remember to select “large” file formats). Use the cutout filter or image > adjustment > posterize to turn the photographic image into an animated image. South Park® blends real imagery with animated, cutout, imagery. Your background does not necessarily have to be animated, but in the TV show, backgrounds are very stylistic and simple.

  4. With the pasted image of the character, students will add to their character by accessorizing them. Give them apparel, jewelry and other accessories that may go with your overall design. Remember when “paste into” is used to select the area with your magic wand and then create a new layer to import your paste into command function.

  5. Most importantly, be creative and have fun with designing your still image. Also, if you would like to add text, the South Park® TV show was also made into a movie. How can you challenge the assignment by making your next South Park® movie poster?
