Components of political culture

  1. Cognitive orientation: this involves the individual having knowledge of and believe in the political leaders and the political system of his country.

  2. Affective Orientation. This involves the attachment of feelings, the Involvement of the individual or his rejection of political leaders and political objects in the society.

  3. Evaluative Orientation: This involves the opinion and judgment people pass, make or have on their political system and the leaders.

Classification or Types of Political Culture

The classification or types of political culture essentially refer to the degree of involvement of citizens in the political process of their state. For this reason, G.A. Almond and S. Verba classified political culture into three categories namely:

  1. Participant or Civic Political Culture: In this type of political culture, the members of the society are politically aware and actively involved in the political process. The citizens are well informed and have clear view of governmental powers and limitations. They belong to various associations, vote at elections, etc.

  2. Subject Political Culture: Here, the members of the society are politically aware of the political activities of their state but they are passive and they contribute little or nothing to the political systems.

  3. Parochial Political Culture in this type of political culture, the citizens are very ignorant of the workings of government. They hardly relate to and identify themselves with politics and for this reason, are unaware of its existence. They do not expect that the policies and programmes of government will in any meaningful way affect their lives. Thus, they contribute nothing to the political system of their state.
