3. Rolling leases
Rolling leases automatically renew themselves each year. For example, a rolling five-year lease will renew itself at the end of each year, so that at the beginning of each year the tenant knows that he or she has at least five more years to continue farming the parcel. Depending on the length of the rolling lease, this type of arrangement can give the farmer tenant a longer-term commitment to the property. With a rolling lease, the landowner must notify the tenant of his or her intent to exit the agreement at the end of the time remaining in the lease.
