White Paper: Broadband Access with Vigor2000

Firmware Version: v1.04

Vigor2000 supports two different access modes with broadband gateway. One is PPPoE Dialup, another is IP Routing mode. Before you configuring Vigor2000 to connect to those broadband gateway (ADSL/Cable modem or router and fractional T1/E1 leased line router etc). You have to get more knowledge regarding your broadband gateway.
This chapter we will introduce how to set up Vigor2000 working with these broadband gateways. The following sections will help you to understand how to use Vigor2000 with these broadband gateways.
ADSL Modem Transparent (Bridging) Mode
When you subscribe the ADSL broadband services, please make sure what kind of operation on the ADSL modem/router. If your service provider supports you one and just only one access account and a PPPoE dialup driver for you. That will be very clear your ADSL modem works as transparent mode or bridging mode. You have to take the following steps to setup your Vigor2000 works with ADSL modem.
Step 1: Connecting ADSL modem to one of Vigor2000 Ethernet port or uplink port

Step 2: Using web configurator "Quick Setup" -> "Internet Access" -> "External Broadband Gateway --- PPPoE Dialup Mode" to set the parameters for PPPoE Dialup. Please refer to "Quick Setup for Internet Access" for more details. The following configuration page is for example.

ADSL Router Working as IP Routing Mode
If your ADSL service provider assigns a public IP for ADSL router and also dispatches a subnet for your local network. In this case, the ADSL router works as default gateway for your local network. All hosts connecting to local network should set the IP address of the ADSL router as a default gateway.
In this application, Vigor2000 can be an ISDN dial backup and NAT router working with the ADSL router together shown as below.

Note: You can open your browser to connect to Web Configurator. And click " Ethernet TCP/IP and DHCP Setup" on the "Basic Setup" group to find 1st IP and 2nd IP configurations as below.

Before you configuring Vigro2000, you will get the IP address and netmask of ADSL router and also a subnet from ISP. Above network architecture, two local networks attached on the same Ethernet interface. Vigor2000 will be set as the default gateway for these two local networks. Therefore, all IP packets should be through Vigor2000 and then go to ADSL router to the Internet.
How does dial backup work by Vigor2000? Because the ADSL router is the default gateway of Vigor2000, and its line status will be periodically diagnosed by Vigor2000. Once the ADSL line was dropped or broken, Vigor2000 will automatically to dial backup for both local networks whatever local and public network. Note that the dial backup function should be supported by your ISP. It means that ISP's ISDN access server should be able to route those IP packets between public local network and Internet. Vigor2000 just provides the ADSL line status diagnostic and dial backup action. If the ADSL line has been recovered, Vigor2000 will disconnect the dial backup connection and forward all IP packets through ADSL router to get on Internet.
In addition, Vigor2000 also can be a remote dial-in access server when ADSL router is online. Home workers or branch offices can dial into Vigor2000 to share the bandwidth of ADSL line. Detailed web-based configurations please refer to "Quick Setup for Internet Access". If you have been familiar to use Web Configurator, please click "Internet Access Setup" on the "Quick Setup" group -> " External Broadband Gateway --- IP Routing Mode" to set up this application.

This application is similar to above. You just can imagine the leased line router is in the role of ADSL router.
