787. Variant of the Preceding. “This set of the rare first Irish publication of the famed Newton variorum is, we believe, unique in that the first volume has two different leaves signed A2. Both contain the opening leaf of the Dedicatory epistle to the Earl of Bath. One begins ‘To The Right Honourable The Earl Of Bath’ and occupies four lines preceding the text of the epistle; the other has the same wording but occupies only two lines prior to the text of the epistle. The leaf bearing the two line heading reprints the text of the English printing, mentioning the copper plate illustrations. This leaf had to be canceled due to the fact that no illustrations ever appeared in this first Irish printing and we know of no other set that retains this leaf mentioning the non-existent illustrations. No bibliography records the existence of this leaf” (Ravenstree).
