Disregarding a painful wound in the shoulder, Private Anderson kept his automatic rifle in action and remained in the advance, until ordered to the rear.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Grover W. Calhoun, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 19, 1918. Private Calhoun distinguished himself by exceptional coolness and heroic handling of his gun. While under intense fire he inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, thereby materially aiding the advance, and was killed on July 19, 1918, while seeking an advantageous position during the advance of that date.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert E. Carroll, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 19, 1918. His platoon having been held up by machine-gun fire from an enemy dugout near Soissons, Sergeant Carroll crawled to the door of the dugout, killed the crew, and captured the gun.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Emmet S. Clary, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 19, 1918. Shocked and bruised by a shell, Private Clary was taken to an aid station and put with the wounded who were to be evacuated; but when Infantry reinforcements passed by he joined them, participated in their attack, and fought effectively with rifle and bayonet. He took five prisoners and was ordered to escort them to the rear. On his way back he ascertained the location of his company commander, and, after disposing of his prisoners, he reported back to his ornization and asked for further duty.

Second Lieutenant Hahn unhesitatingly went into heavy shell fire to supervise the repair of telephone lines and to act as runner when the further maintenance of the wires became an impossibility.

Due to his gallantry, his company commander was able to keep in close touch with platoon leaders. Corporal Kell on several occasions dressed the wounded under heavy enemy fire.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Emory Mahafey, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Cantigny, France May 28 – 29, 1918. Private Mahafey did more than his duty under violent fire in the open to relieve sufferings of the wounded. On his way to a machine- gun emplacement to succor men who had been injured there, he stopped to give first aid to Private Jay Ler. Antes, who lay mortally wounded and exposed to machine-gun fire, and while performing this heroic act was killed.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Arlie C. Oppenheim, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 19, 1918. During the attack on this date, Corporal Oppenheim assisted his platoon commander in pushing forward the attack ainst strong enemy resistance. Later, when the advance of his platoon was halted by machine-gun fire, he, with three others, advanced ahead of our lines and silenced the enemy machine gun. Due to his llantry, his ornization was enabled to continue the advance. Later in the engagement, he was seriously wounded and evacuated to the hospital.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Hamilton A. Smith, Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Soissons, France, July 19 – 22, 1918. Colonel smith spent the greater part of his time in the front lines to encourage and direct his command, without sign of fear for his personal safety, and by his courageous leadership inspired his officers and men to effective combat. He was killed while directing an attack on a machine gun emplacement.

On his own initiative Sergeant Smith took command of his company when all its officers and its first sergeant had been killed or wounded, and carried forward successfully its part in the day’s attack.

Throughout this period Captain Wilson led his company ainst the enemy in a masterly manner, displaying exceptional judgment, energy, and conspicuous llantry until he received a severe wound which permanently disabled his right arm.

Private Allen, together with four other men, charged a machine-gun nest containing three heavy machine guns and captured the three guns and twenty prisoners.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Terry Nichols Hendricks, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Mont Blanc, France, October 4, 1918. During the course of a terrific bombardment by the enemy, which forced the firing battery to take shelter, and when two of the gun crew were seriously wounded, Lieutenant Hendricks voluntarily left cover and, without regard for his own safety, carried the wounded men through heavy fire to a place of safety.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John D. Mathis, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in the Chateau- Thierry Sector, France, June 6, 1918. As a leader of a platoon on the first day of the Chateau-Thierry battle, First Lieutenant Mathis demonstrated conspicuous courage and ability, fearlessly going forward at the head of his command through hostile machine-gun fire. Killed while leading a valiant charge, his daring inspired his men to successful assault.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to George B. Statham, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Tuilerie Farm, France, November 4, 1918. Although he was the only remaining member of his gun crew, Private Statham courageously operated his gun until he had put one enemy machine-gun nest out of action. He continued with his heroic work until he was killed.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Edwin L. Ballard, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Supply Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Bouresches, France, June 7 - 8, 1918. Quartermaster Clerk Ballard volunteered and made repeated trips in a truck over a road swept by heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, in plain view of the enemy observation balloons, to deliver ammunition and rations into the town of Bouresches, France, thereby relieving a critical situation.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Grover Cleveland O'Kelley, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 80th Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, on June 6 - 8, 1918. Sergeant O'Kelley displayed the greatest qualities of courage and leadership in assaults against strong enemy machine-gun positions, and was killed in the performance of this splendid duty. The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Macon C. Overton, Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for repeated acts of extraordinary heroism while serving with the 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Blanc Mont, France, October 2 - 10, 1918. When his battalion was halted by severe fire, Captain Overton attacked and reduced one strong enemy machine-gun nest, and, moving forward, captured one field piece which was firing point-blank at his company. He was wounded the next day, but he refused to be evacuated, and continued to lead his command with skill and courage throughout the engement. On October 8, after occupying St. Etienne without casualties in his company, Captain Overton went through heavy artillery and machine-gun fire to establish liaison with another company, his conspicuous gallantry inspiring his men to repel two strong counterattacks. The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Macon C. Overton, Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Georges, France, November 1, 1918. Captain Overton displayed remarkable courage in leading his company under heavy artillery fire and silencing five machine-gun nests. He then personally undertook to guide a tank forward against machine-gun positions and while so doing was seriously wounded by a German anti-tank sniper.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to H. M. Barfield, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Mezy, France, July 15, 1918. During the battle of the Marne, near Mezy, Lieutenant Barfield rallied the men of a company who were falling back in disorder, formed them and stopped what otherwise would have been a rout. This, in the face of heavy machine-gun and artillery fire. At the same time, he managed and controlled the fire of his four machine guns so as to deliver an annihilating fire on the enemy.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John I. Beck, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Fossoy, France, July 15, 1918. After the remainder of his platoon had become casualties, Corporal Beck, with five other soldiers, succeeded in holding his platoon position against a flank attack by the enemy, inspiring his men by his courage to pour a deadly fire into the ranks of the approaching Germans. Though he was wounded by machine-gun bullet, he refused to leave his post until he was finally ordered to be evacuated.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Jennings B. Browne, Bugler, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Fossoy, France, July 14 - 15, 1918. Bugler Browne exposed himself to heavy fire while carrying numerous messages during the heavy artillery preparation preceding the last German offensive. He was killed while acting as guide to a front-line platoon.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles D. Harris, Captain, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in the Claires-Chenes Woods, October 20, 1918. While leading his company in an attack on enemy machine- gun nests, Captain Harris, with three of his men in advance of the remainder of the company, fearlessly attacked an enemy machine-gun nest, capturing three prisoners, and two guns, turning the guns ainst the enemy. He was mortally wounded while operating one of the guns in an exposed position.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to William T. Hopkins, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Le Channel, France, July 28, 1918. After his commanding officer, himself, and 32 members of the battery had been wounded by a bomb from an enemy plane, Lieutenant Hopkins assumed command of the battery, remaining at his post until all wounded had been evacuated and another officer found to replace him.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Hubert W. Keith, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action northeast of Cunel, France, October 22, 1918. First Lieutenant Keith courageously led his company in the attack on Hill 299, exposed to heavy machine-gun fire. He quickly ornized his position, and later repelled an enemy counterattack. Although wounded on the evening of the 22d, he continued with his company until the following day.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Edward J. Lenahan, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Montfaucon, France, October 7, 1918. Corporal Lenahan, a runner, repeatedly carried messages through heavy barrages. On one occasion, when an enemy shell struck a dugout occupied by himself and several comrades, burying two of them, though he was suffering from the concussion, he immediately set to work digging out the imprisoned men, disrerding the intense shell and machine-gun fire to which he was subjected.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Milton E. Long, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Cunel Heights, France, October 12, 1918. After being severely wounded by a machine-gun bullet, Lieutenant Long displayed exceptional courage and determination by remaining with his platoon, moving it forward and clearing the woods of enemy machine guns, three of which he captured with their entire crews.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Frank A. Pattillo, Captain, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action north of Montfaucon, France, October 11, 1918. Captain Pattillo personally led his company in attack upon the enemy position and exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire in order to advance his forward units. Although twice wounded, he refused to be evacuated, but remained where he fell, continuing to urge his men forward.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John Raborn, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Bois-de-Belleau, France, June 21, 1918. While making his way to a first-aid station after being wounded in five places by machine-gun bullets and shrapnel, he encountered two Germans. His own rifle having been shot away, Private Raborn picked up a rifle lying nearby and shot one of the Germans; and, in a bayonet duel with the other German, killed him also, after he himself had been wounded ain during the encounter.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Harry P. Simpson, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Le Channel, France, July 28, 1918. After his commanding officer and 32 members of his battery had been wounded by a bomb from an enemy plane, Sergeant Simpson, himself wounded, assisted in the evacuation of the wounded, after which he remained until his piece was placed in a new position, before he retired for treatment.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert Shelley Waite, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Cunel Woods. France, October 11, 1918. Although shot through the arm, Lieutenant Waite, with his company, charged a machine-gun nest. His attempt being unsuccessful, he reformed his company and again attacked this time silencing the nest and capturing it.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Frank B. Gresham, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near the Bois-du-Fays, France, September 26, 1918. After his patrol had been twice scattered by machine-gun, fire, Sergeant Gresham continued his reconnaissance, accompanied by only one other soldier, and secured the information for which he had been sent. Upon rejoining his company he was placed in command of his platoon, whose commander had been wounded, and succeeded in reornizing it under heavy shell fire.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Alvan C. Sandeford, Major, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Chery- Chartreuve, France, August 8 - 17, 1918. Twice ssed, Major Sandeford declined to be evacuated and continued in active command of his battalion. Having been advised and knowing that failure to be evacuated would probably result in his death, he nevertheless continued until he fell from his saddle in a state of total collapse. His fortitude and spirit of self-sacrifice were conspicuous.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Albert B. Simpson, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Nantillois, France, September 27 - 28, 1918. Lieutenant Simpson, though he was wounded, remained with his company, and by skillful arrangement of his machine-gun covered a retirement of the infantry. Next day he was ain wounded, and, although urged by the surgeon to go to the rear, this llant officer replied that there was too much work yet to be done at the front. He left t9 rejoin his command and had gone about half the distance when he was killed by a high-explosive shell.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John C. Vann, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Bazoches, France, August 7, 1918. Lieutenant Vann concealed the fact that he was wounded and led the advance platoon of his company to their objectives despite heavy losses. He remained with his command, displaying the highest leadership and courage, until he was wounded a second time.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Luther Y, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near the Bois-de-Chatillon, France, November 5, 1918. As Private y and another soldier were going to the rear to guide the remainder of their company to its position, they were fired on from an enemy machine-gun nest. Attacking the nest, they killed four of the crew and captured one prisoner, driving off the remainder.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Courtney H. Hodges, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Breulles, France, November 2 - 4, 1918. Lieutenant Colonel Hodges personally conducted a reconnaissance of the Meuse River, to determine the most advantageous location for a crossing, and for a bridge site. Having ornized a storming party, he attacked the enemy not 100 paces distant, and, although failing, he managed to effect the crossing of the canal after 20 hours of ceaseless struggling. His fearlessness and courage were mainly responsible for the advance of his bride to the heights east of the Meuse.

Accompanied by another soldier, Sergeant Stoker advanced ainst an enemy machine-gun unit which was holding up the advance of his platoon and the company on his left, He completed the capture of the position, killing three of the enemy and routing the remaining part of the unit, thereby enabling his platoon to advance to their objective.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Blanton Winship, Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Lachaussee, France, November 9, 1918. While commanding his regiment and observing from his outpost line the progress of a daylight raid on the enemy by a detachment of his officers and men, Colonel Winship discovered the enemy enveloping the right flank of the raiding party. Hastily collecting and organizing a small party from the few available men, he, regardless of his own safety, personally led them forward under heavy rifle, machine- gun, and shell fire, and covered the exposed flank, advancing over a deep tank obstruction and through enemy wire to their second line, destroying several machine guns and killing many of the enemy. His prompt and fearless action enabled the main raiding party to accomplish its mission, and his personal conduct was a great inspiration to his officers and men and contributed largely to the success of the raid.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas M. Purdom, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Romagne, France, October 9 - 11, 1918. Voluntarily assuming the duties of runner, after he had seen many others fail in attempting to get through the unusually heavy fire, Corporal Purdom repeatedly passed through the fire and aided materially in the success of the entire operations. When the supply of first-aid material had become exhausted, he ain went through, returning with sufficient bandages to care for the wounded, who could not, at that time, be removed.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Henry E. Bunch, Captain (Medical Corps), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near the Bois-de-Chatillon, France, October 13 - 16, 1918. During the advance of his regiment in the Verdun sector he established aid stations at points as far advanced as possible and supervised them throughout the combat, working continuously, and fearlessly without food or rest. On October 14 this officer went out in advance of the front line to reconnoiter a site for an aid station and an ambulance route. Seeing a wounded officer lying about 300 meters from the enemy's line, he went to his rescue and carried him through terrific machine-gun and rifle fire to a shell hole, where he administered aid, in entire disrerd of his own safety.

Sergeant Minter led his section forward, secured his objective, supervised the consolidation of his position, laid his guns personally with calmness, accuracy, and decision, and continued to direct the operations of his men, all in the face of severe enemy machine-gun and shell fire, until he was killed.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Terrell Winfred Hill, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Grand Pre, France, October 23, 1918. His company commander being wounded, Lieutenant Hill assumed command of the company and led it llantly forward in the attack. Due to the intensity of the enemy fire, the advance was halted, but this officer continued to expose himself in order to place his men in a position of shelter. In the performance of this act he was himself wounded in the right arm but continued in active command of the company until relieved the following day.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Albert S. Burch, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Juvin, France, October 14, 1918. While leading his men against determined enemy resistance, Lieutenant Burch was severely wounded in the arm by four machine-gun bullets. Although suffering intense pain, he continued to press on until ordered to the rear. On his way to the dressing station, he endeavored to carry a more severely wounded officer; and although greatly weakened, he struggled with his burden until the arrival of litter bearers.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Frank Carter, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Juvin, France, October 11, 1918. Leading two platoons across the Aire River, Lieutenant Carter brought his command to the aid of an assault company which had been stopped by withering enemy fire. As senior officer with the troops who had crossed the River, he constantly exposed himself in organizing units and directing fire. He continued in action after being wounded, being evacuated only after he had dropped from exhaustion, and after he had rescued three wounded enlisted men and one officer.

After the barrage had failed to fall in time, he led his platoon into the face of machine-gun fire, personally capturing one gun and turning it on the enemy, causing them to flee in disorder. Haying reached his objective, he ornized his positions under a heavy artillery barrage.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joseph W. Conkling, Captain, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action during the advance from Sommerance-St. Juvin road toward Landres-et-St. Georges, France, October 11, 1918. When the entire line was held up by direct artillery fire and concentrated machine- gun fire Captain Conkling crawled out on the open crest of the hill for a distance of 200 yards alone, for the purpose of reconnoitering and spotting enemy emplacements. Though the fire was constant and direct, he reached his objective and returned, seriously wounded several times by machine-gun bullets which later caused his death.

Captain Cunningham, though painfully wounded in the face by shrapnel when his battalion was seriously enged, continued to lead his men through heavy shell fire, leading them with skill and inspiring them with courage.

Lieutenant Forrester volunteered for duty with other organizations ordered to make a daylight raid against the enemy. His superb leadership and coolness under very trying circumstances greatly reduced the number of casualties among his troops and his disregard of personal safety greatly inspired his men.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John B. Rner, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action north of Clermery, in Lorraine, France, on the night of 16 - 17 August, 1918. Although wounded in the face and hand, Sergeant Rner went 50 meters up a road in the face of fire from two German machine-guns and of exploding grenades to rescue a lieutenant who lay 100 meters within the German wire, so severely wounded as to be unable to move without assistance. Sergeant. Rner put the officer on his back, crawled through the enemy's wire and from there carried him 500 meters across open ground, under fire, to safety.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Georges Goumas, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Fleville, France, October 21, 1918. Private First Class Goumas was in a relay station which was struck by a shell, wounding him and five others. After assisting the other wounded men to a truck near by, he returned through the falling shells to the relay station and assisted another soldier in repairing the wire, which had been cut, remaining at his post until he had made sure that the lines were in good condition and he was ordered to come in by his commanding officer.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Walter A. Holt, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Juvin, France, October 15 - 16, 1918. Private Holt volunteered to establish liaison with the unit on the right, although this mission required that he cross an area swept by heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. Although fired upon at short range by enemy snipers, he successfully completed his mission and succeeded in capturing three German prisoners. Later he exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire in order to assist in the rescue of the wounded.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Lovick P. Lingo, Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Cornay, France, October 9 - 10, 19I8. Lieutenant Lingo was with an attacking party, which, after driving off the enemy, was counterattacked and surrounded. Upon being called on to surrender, he refused, and despite the fact that ten men had been shot down in trying to get away, fought his way out and, though wounded, reached his own lines. Later, when Lieutenant Lingo learned that his company 'was without officers, he returned and remained with it for several days until weakness from his wound forced his evacuation.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joe B. Peavy, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Cornay, France, October 9, 1918. Although his command was nearly surrounded and enemy machine-guns were pouring an incessant fire on them, Lieutenant Peavy directed the fire of his men, after having been seriously wounded. He remained during the advance, refusing first aid until those about him needing attention were properly cared for.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John M. Peurifoy, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Pylone, France, October 9, 1913. After he had seen an officer and 13 men of his company fall from the fire of enemy machine-guns and snipers, 82ndSergeant Peurifoy advanced alone, and, after crawling about 50 yards in advance of his company, he shot a sniper from a tree and drove off the crews of two machine-guns located nearby. His action permitted the further advance of his company.

In an early morning raid Lieutenant Ruge charged up an exposed hillside and single-handed captured an enemy machine-gun position. This officer further distinguished himself near Champigneulles, France, October 16, 1918. while reornizing the 1st Battalion, 326th Infantry, under heavy fire and leading it to the attack.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Beverely A. Shipp, Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Cornay, France, October 9 - 10, 1918. After successfully driving off the enemy Lieutenant Shipp’s attacking force was counterattacked and surrounded. The officers in charge decided to surrender to the greatly superior numbers, but Lieutenant Shipp, refusing to do so, made his way to our lines through deadly enemy fire, although severely wounded while doing so.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Marion C. Tucker, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Sommerance, France, October 12, 1918. While being carried unconscious to a dressing station, after having been wounded, Sergeant Tucker reined consciousness, arose from the stretcher and rejoined his company, Shortly after a s shell exploded in a dugout where he and other men were taking cover. Although badly wounded, he again refused evacuation, remaining on duty with the company until it was relieved 16 days later.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert Walton, Jr., First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Cornay, France, October 9 - 10, 1918. After fighting for six hours, First Lieutenant Walton volunteered to lead 16 men in a night patrol of the town of Cornay, which was held by many enemy machine-gun posts. The party worked at clearing the town of the enemy from 11 o'clock at night until next morning, capturing 65 prisoners and two machine-guns. With three soldiers, he entered an enemy dugout and captured 23 prisoners.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Homer Watkins, Major, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Juvin, France, October 11 - 17, 1918. On the night of October 11, Major Watkins led his battalion under heavy shell fire and forded the Aire River, taking up an important position protecting the flank. On October 14 and 15 he advanced ainst strongly held enemy positions, penetrating and capturing numerous prisoners and machine-guns. He was wounded on both days, but he continued on duty until October 17, suffering intense pain, until he was ordered to the rear. His fortitude and bravery furnished an inspiring example to his men.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Jake C. Sartain, Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Marie Farm, France, September 18, 1918. As Sergeant Sartain was successfully directing the erection of barbed wire entanglements under heavy shell fire, he heard cries for help from the direction of the enemy's lines. He immediately went out to investite, and, upon finding a soldier of another ornization lying wounded, carried him to our lines, twice passing through enemy machine-gun fire in accomplishing this heroic act.
