Iowa FFA Band
An Iowa FFA Band of 75 pieces was first organized in 1934 and made its initial appearance at the annual state FFA conference that year. Since that time, the FFA band has been one of the features of each conference program.
The 1938 band was composed of 100 members from 33 FFA chapters in the state. All were active members in good standing with their local chapters and with few exceptions were in high school and enrolled in vocational agriculture classes.
The band appeared in uniform at the 10th State Convention program held at Iowa State College, May 12-13, 1938; the 1938 Iowa Centennial Fair, August 24 to September 2; and the 11th National FFA Convention at Kansas City, October 17, 1938. Mr. A.R. Edgar, director of the Iowa State College Bands, and his assistant Mr. Paul Bachman, directed the band at these three appearances.
The band was financed by the state and national organizations, the local chapters and individual members. The state association provided music, official uniform caps, lodging and transportation. Local chapters and individual members provided official uniform jackets, instruments, and personal expenses. The five-day trip to the National Convention was made by chartered buses, railroad and private automobiles.
Chapters with members in the band when it appeared on the National Convention program were as follows: Ackley, Ankeny, Carroll, Castana, Clarinda, College Springs, Denison, Denmark, Dunlap, Fairfield, Forest City, Grand Junction, Griswold, Iowa Falls, Logan, Lytton, Manilla, Mapleton, Marengo, Mount Ayr, Muscatine, Ogden, Panora, Pella, Radcliffe, Sac City, Shenandoah, Sigourney, Story City, Tipton, Waukee, West Branch, Winterset.
The appearance of the Iowa FFA Band has become an established custom at the annual state conference. The members come from the chapters located in all sections of the state.
Since 1950, Band Directors have been: R. Cedric Anderson, Cedar Rapids, 19 years, and served as National FFA Band Director 1962-63-64; Merrill Brown, Council Bluffs, 1 year; Robert Ballenger, Jesup, 1 year; Dale Carris, Sioux City, 1 year; Robert Colwell, Council Bluffs, 1 year; Jim Burr, Sumner, 1 year; Ron den Hartog, Newton, 2 years; Jerry Ellingson, Marshalltown, 1976-94; William Bird, West Des Moines, 1995-current.
The Iowa FFA Band has appeared at State Conference since 1934; State Fair in 1940-41, 1946-52; and at Dairy Cattle Congress in 1946-47.
Iowa FFA Chorus
The Iowa FFA Chorus was organized in 1948-49 and has made its appearance at every State Conference since that time.
Since 1950, Chorus Directors have been Paul Anthon, Cedar Rapids, 2 years; Lee Knoll, Sioux City, 1 year; Robert Larson, Sioux City, 1 year; Vincent McCowen, Waterloo, 1 year; Pam Mumm, Newton; Bruce Norris, Mondamin; and for 24 of 26 years from 1978 to 1997, Joe McCoy, Davenport.
