YMCA LEADS DROWNING PREVENTION EFFORTS TO BUILD SAFER SWIMMERS

GO SPLASH offers mobile aquatics programming through Shared Use Agreements

Broward County, FL … The YMCA of Broward County kicks off summer with it GoSPLASH mobile aquatics program offered at Stranahan High School and apartment complexes throughout Broward.

GoSPLASH provides a team of YMCA aquatics professionals directly to the community with swim lessons and water safety education. The YMCA of Broward County provides 8,500 swim lessons annually. The SPLASH program will serve 1,500 students this year. GoSPLASH runs during the months of summer, June 9th to August 8th.
SPLASH teaches participants basic swimming skills and water safety habits. Last year the YMCA of Broward County was able to impact over 900 children across Broward County in this amazing program.
Shared Use Agreements allow community based organizations to utilize community assets that increase opportunities for physical activity and safe recreation. The Ys Shared Use Agreement with Stranahan High School will provide free swim lessons and critical water safety education to community members.
Accidental drowning is the leading cause of death among infants and small children in Florida. Broward County leads the state, and Miami-Dade is second.
“Sadly, this year in the first four months we’ve had 6 drowning deaths among children under the age of 5, when last year we had a total of 7,” says Sheryl A. Woods, CEO & President of the YMCA of Broward County. “Most drownings of children under the age of five occur in unguarded pools, backyards and apartment complexes. The reality is accidental drowning is preventable. Parents can help make their kids safer by knowing and using three layers of drowning prevention – active adult supervision at all times; locks and alarms on all gates and doors leading to the pool; and water safety and swim lessons.”
The YMCA of Broward County has been a leader in providing swim lessons and water safety for nearly 70 years. It offers a variety of programs including youth and adult swim lessons, competitive and non-competitive swimming teams, and family swim.
