4TH AACTA AWARDS
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS OR ANIMATION

AFI | AACTA recognises that the Australian visual effects industry is part of a global workforce that contributes to international as well as local films.

The purpose of this Award is to recognise outstanding visual effects and animation work performed in Australia across feature film, television and documentary, regardless of the origin of the production.

ENTERING THE AWARDS - General Rules

  • Any Australian-produced visual effects or animation in a feature film, television or documentary production that meets the eligibility requirements below and was released or broadcast in Australia from November 7 2013 to December 31 2014 is eligible.

  • The visual effects or animation work must have been 100% created in Australia, with the exception of any matchmoving or rotoscoping services that may have been outsourced internationally. The purpose of this is to recognise that due to commercial reality non-creative tasks are commonly outsourced to lower cost regions.

  • The person submitting the entry to the Awards must be a representative of the Australian entity that was contracted by the film’s Producer/s to create the work being submitted.

  • Only ONE entry per production per contracted Australian entity is allowed.

  • DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 5pm Monday November 24 2014

HOW TO MAKE AN ENTRY

  • Designate ONE person to be your primary ‘go to’ person for all AACTA Awards matters. This person is the official Submitter. He or she must sign the Submission Form.

  • Complete one entry form per entry. Do not combine multiple entries on a single form.

  • Each entry should have a distinct name on both the entry form and on the Slate (e.g. Australia – Darwin Bombing).

  • Have your printed entry form signed by the appropriate individuals and submitted as per the details on the form.

  • Entry fee is $300 and must be paid by 5pm Monday November 24 2014.

  • NOTE: Your submission is not complete and will not be vetted until a signed copy of the Entry Form has been received and payment has been made

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

As well as a completed Entry Form and Entry Fee, you must also submit:

  • The Work To Be Considered (the work you are submitting for the judges to view); and

  • The Before & Afters Material.

Work To Be Considered

All Work To Be Considered must be submitted as screened in theatrical release or television broadcast. You may submit up to 4:00 minutes maximum. You may NOT:

  • Change the order of sequences from how they appeared within the production.

  • Change the order of or edit shots within a sequence.

  • Add fades or dissolves to ‘smooth’ awkward transitions created by cutting down the sequence. However, you may place a few frames of black between segments.

We recommend that the Work To Be Considered include the surrounding portions of the edit, if possible, to provide contextual reference on how the work fits into the scene, sequence, or film.
Before & Afters Material

The Before & Afters Material should demonstrate how the work was accomplished through one or more of the following: storyboards, animatics, previz, raw plates, raw elements, work-in-progress, the finished work. You may submit up to 4:00 minutes maximum.

Your entry may be disqualified if the Before & Afters contain any of the following:

  • Extraneous material that does not relate directly to the Work To Be Considered.

  • Shots or sequences that are not shown in the Work To Be Considered.

  • Talking heads explaining the work (voice-over narration is acceptable).

Entrants are responsible for their own quality control. AFI | AACTA accepts no responsibility for viewing materials that do not play properly, are submitted at the wrong resolution or format, or are of inferior quality.

Written Support Material

Submitters may, at their option, provide a concise written description of how the Work To Be Considered was created. This should be supplied as a PDF with your entry.

  • Put the name of the submission on every page.

  • Keep the number of pages to a minimum (maximum three pages) as judges will have limited time to review your material.

  • Use large type for easy reading in subdued light.

  • Reprints of magazine or web articles are not allowed.

Credit and Images

Submitters must also supply opening and closing credits from the production, to verify the eligibility, role and spelling of entered Award Candidates.

Submitters are also asked to supply, where possible:

  • 2 x publicity stills from the production

  • 1 x poster image for the production.

Any Written Support Material, Credits and Images must be emailed to awards@afi.org.au along with the submission of the Entry Form and Entry Fee by 5pm Monday November 24 2014.

  • PostHouse_MovieTitle.pdf e.g. Iloura_iFrank.pdf
