The British Isles are a small group of islands in the North Sea. They are close to mainland Europe. The two largestx islands are Ireland and Britain. The position of the British Isles, on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean, is very important for the weather in Ireland and Britain. Cold wind1 blows across the Atlantic and brings a lot of clouds2 and rain to the British Isles.

Ireland is famous as a ‘green’ island because the weather is often rainy3. There aren’t any tall mountains4 in Ireland, so the land is green with grass. There are tall mountains and beautiful valleys5 in Wales, the north of England and in Scotland. When the Atlantic clouds hit these mountains, they drop their rain6 across Britain.

The year is divided into four seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The weather changes through the year. Spring is usually rainy and windy7. Summer is often warm and sunny8. In Autumn, the weather becomes colder. In Winter, it usually snows in Scotland, in the north of England and in Wales. Sometimes the weather is foggy. Fog9 is very dangerous because it is difficult to see far away.

The weather in the British Isles, is never very hot or very cold. There are no jungles or deserts10 or rainforests in the British Isles. This is because of the Gulf Stream, a stream of warm water which comes across the Atlantic Ocean from the Mexican Gulf. The people of the British Isles have to say a big ‘thank you’ to Mexico.
