Summary

Mark Billinghurst is a researcher developing innovative computer interfaces that explore how virtual and real worlds can be merged to enhance face-to-face and remote collaboration. Director of the Human Interface Technology Laboratory (New Zealand) and a research scientist at the HIT Lab (US), he has produced over 80 technical publications and his work has been demonstrated at a wide variety of conferences. He is active in several research areas including Augmented and Virtual Reality, wearable computing and conversational computer interfaces. Manager of the HIT Lab's Augmented Reality research group, he has previously worked at ATR Research Labs in Japan, British Telecom and the MIT Media Laboratory. He has successfully raised over $850,000 in research support and has transferred technology from academia to industry, serving as a CTO for a startup company. Winner of the 2001 Discover award for best Entertainment application for the MagicBook work, he is listed in Wurman’s TEDRegister of the 1000 most creative people in America.

Sample Projects

Virtual Dig: A virtual reality archeological dig that allows users to uncover virtual models of artifacts using a tangible interface metaphor. Installed at the Seattle Art Museum, this interface was experienced by over 25,000 visitors in 2001.

http://www.hitl.washington.edu/people/rmay/SAM/SAM.html

The MagicBook: An interface that explores how a real object can be used to move users seamlessly from Reality to immersive Virtual Reality. Looking at a real book, users can see 3D virtual models appearing attached to the pages. When they see an interesting scene they can fly into it and experience it immersively. Applications include education, scientific visualization and entertainment. http://www.hitl.washington.edu/magicbook/

AR Conferencing: An Augmented Reality (AR) conferencing application that allows remote collaborators to appear as live virtual video avatars in a user’s workspace. This overcomes many of the limitations of desktop video conferencing such as lack of spatial cues, eye contact and limited portability, and provides an increased sense of presence.

http://www.hitl.washington.edu/publications/r-99-11/

Shared Space: An Augmented Reality interface for enhancing face-to-face collaboration. Users around a table can see each other as well as 3D virtual images in their midst. These images are attached to real cards and so can be manipulated as easily as a real object. Shown at SIGGRAPH 1999. http://www.hitl.washington.edu/research/shared_space/

WearCom: A wearable communications space that uses spatial audio and visual cues to significantly improve remote collaboration. A wearable computer is used to spatialize internet telephony enabling users to easily communicate with multiple remote people at the same time. http://www.hitl.washington.edu/publications/r-97-48//r-97-48.pdf

ARToolKit: An open source software toolkit for developing AR applications. Using computer vision techniques it provides fast accurate tracking information needed by AR interfaces and is used by over 200 sites worldwide in many application domains. http://www.hitl.washington.edu/artoolkit/
