A Reflective Essay on Marriage Success – Communication with Clarity, Timing and Tempo
In the article “Communication with Clarity, timing and tempo” by Danny Ray, the writer explains how the clarity of communication, its timing and tempo results to marriage success. The increasing awareness and application of the script’s elements to marriage preserves the relationship and benefits both the husband and the wife. Nonetheless, the couple must first move from the “old patterns of communication” and replace them with information clarity, timing and tempo. To start with, clarity not only builds trust but as well shows significant impact on the results of a conversation. Secondly, the timing influences understanding. Here, choosing the correct timing to address a particular issue changes the conversation outcome to the better. In fact, even the slightest change in time to speak on something can result to a huge difference in having a healthy conversation. Lastly, a more effective communication is one that is built on the right tempo. For instance, amid a heated conversation, slowing down the tempo does the magic. Therefore, effective communication lies beyond an illusion (Ray, 2023).
In my personal experience, interactions made with most long-lived couples have proven the essence of effective communication (based on correct timing, tempo and clarity). As Holmquist (2021) explains, it is the art of talking about and listening to what your spouse is saying. An intimate conversation demands each individual to give undivided attention, avoid interruptions during the talk and the conversation itself ought to be conducted at proper timings. In fact, just like effective communication is critical to any relationship, it holds imperative to a successful marriage. In marriage relationships, an individual shares their life with someone else’s and it only through effective communication that each can ensure that the other individual’s needs are met.
In conclusion, communication is not all about exchanging words; it encompasses, the speech and body language (clarity), tone of voice (tempo) and proper context (timing). Both parties need to be transparent, honest and understanding to achieve effective communication. For instance, as Ury (2017) affirms gentle words often turn away anger; a “soft no” that has been uttered with sincerity, consideration and politeness is more powerful than a “yes” with no such qualities.
