Active and Passive Voice 1
Part 1: Identify the following sentences as active voice (A) or passive voice (P).
_______ 1. We cooked the meal, washed the dishes, and did our homework.

_______ 3. Jimmy Smith was known and liked by everyone.

Part 2: Rewrite all passive voice sentences to active voice sentences. Some of the sentences are already in active voice; in that case, write ‘active’ on the line.

Part 3: Read the paragraph. Change any very that is in passive voice to active voice.

(1) The senior class recently took a trip to New York and saw many different sights. (2) The first thing the students was the Statue of Liberty when Manhattan Island was toured. (3) When several students went to see the Empire State Building, others stayed and did some shopping. (4) Later, the United Nations was visited, and the class saw many people from foreign countries all over the world. (5) The next day several bridges were seen by those who went to Brooklyn and the Bronx. (6) Some even went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where they saw many famous printings. (7) Another cultural excursion occurred when the New York Philharmonic was heard by the students who went to the Lincoln Center. (8) The senior class found their trip very exciting and have expressed the hope that New York City could be experienced by other students.

Part 4: Rewrite each of the following sentences to avoid passive voice.

Part 5: Change any verb that is in passive voice in the following paragraph.

(1) The last game of the year proved to be very exciting. (2) For the first eight innings, both teams were shut out. (3) It was only in the bottom of the ninth that runs were scored by our team. (4) The first batter hit a ball that was dropped by the shortstop, and the pitcher walked the next batter. (5) Even though Mike, the third batter, struck out, it was only our first out. (6) After Mike fame Frankie who singled and the bases were loaded. (7) Our catcher, batting next, was out put when the pitcher caught a pop fly. (8) Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the crowd cheered in the stands. (9) James received the first pitch, a fast ball, which was thrown for a strike. (10) Three pitches followed, all balls, before one was struck at and fouled away. (11) The last pitch of the game was bit by James over the center field fence. (12) The game was won by our team, and James was acclaimed our hero.
