Anglophone Countries* Reports
Individually or in groups, students draw names of countries to see which one they will report on. They should do research on their own or during class if it takes place in computer room. Written reports do not need to be turned in, but the spoken reports should use complete sentences.
Materials:
World Map – students will show where the country is located
Flags – students will hang or hold the flag
National Anthem – students can include recording of national anthem to be played at end of report
Reports should include:
Geographic location of country (using prepositions of location), population, capital city, largest cities, climate, currency, president/prime minister, national anthem, other official languages besides English, size in relation to France (larger or smaller?), famous tourist attractions, etc.
Alternative: students act as travel agents and describe the country in a way that is an advertisement for tourism and encourages tourists to visit; include price of plane ticket from France, exchange rates, ways of getting around (car rental, public transportation?), what to see, do, eat, etc.
Audience:
Audience should be taking notes on reports. After each student gives report, teacher asks questions to audience. They can be rather easy, such as describe the flag, or rather hard if they weren’t paying attention very well, such as Who is the current president/prime minister? or What is the current population?
Homework:
After all reports are finished, students write paragraph or essay on which Anglophone country they would most like to visit/study in and why.
If possible, record the students doing their reports with camera in order to correct their grammar and pronunciation later on; or show it in class so students can review facts on each country.
*Or substitute American states for Anglophone countries.
There are, of course, more than the 13 countries listed below that speak English, but these are the countries that English assistants come from to teach in France.
