| Arslan Naeem, New to the area and to the country, Arslan Naeem struggled, like so many others, to find employment. Contra Costa County had an unemployment rate of 11.2% (21.4% in Bay Point), and Arslan knew he needed help to become self-sufficient. Timid and unsure, he decided to visit the Bay Point Career Center to meet with Rossana Peniche, WIA Case Manager. Rossana sensed his apprehension and approached Arslan to ask how she could help. He mentioned that he had arrived in the U.S. just a few months prior and desperately needed to find work to support his wife and his baby. He needed job search guidance and was motivated to do whatever it would take. Rossana met with Arslan and gave him an overview of WIA services. She also shared with him the calendar of workshops available at EASTBAY Works and Opportunity Junction. Together, they prepared an action plan for his job search. Arslan says, “I felt relieved by the end of our meeting to see how many resources were available. And it was even better when I learned they are at no cost to me!” The only expectation from him was his commitment to follow through. But following through with his commitment proved to be more difficult than he originally imagined. “There were times when I felt hopeless and disappointed. Finding a job was so difficult, and I didn’t want to disappoint Rossana, my family, or myself.” However, he continued to follow-through his action plan. He attended various workshops through EASTBAY Works, and he also began to take night courses at Opportunity Junction. Every time he met with Rossana, he felt more optimistic because he left knowing exactly what step to take in his action plan. His perseverance and commitment paid-off; Arslan was offered a position with Tower Mart. Arslan is now a full-time employee with benefits and has a strong chance of professional growth within Tower Energy Group DBA: Tower Mart.
