Music Analysis: “Movin’ Out” by Billy Joel

Instrumentation: Piano, Electric Guitar, Drums, Electric Bass, Trumpets, Tenor Saxophone, and Alto Saxophone.

  • 0’00”-0’13”: Guitar has the melody. Piano plays double time, playing a chord on every eight note to keep an energetic tempo. Drums play high hat on every beat, with beats 1 and 3 being accented by the snare. Bass plays in rhythm with the guitar; beat is held primarily by drums. This is the main pattern for the song.

  • Pattern and instrumentation from 0’00”-0’13” continues, vocal soloist begins to sing. Some more prominent embellishments with the drums on the high hat at 0’28”.

  • 0‘32”-0’35”: Cymbal hit on beat 1, bass drum used to accent beat 3. Call and response between solo vocalist and backup vocals.

  • 0’36”-0’41”: Returns to pattern from 0’00”-0’13”.

  • 0’41”-0’42”: Transition occurs with the piano playing an ascending scale and the drums on the toms.

  • 0’43”-0’51”: Crash cymbal at the beginning. Cymbals and snare accent the 1st and 3rd beats. The guitar plays ascending two note intervals in a syncopated beat on 2 and 4. Piano plays chords in the background.

  • 0’52”-0’56”: Vocalist holds note. Cymbals accent beats 1 and 3 lighter than before. Light harmonics on a guitar from 0’52”-0’53”. Guitar and piano play and hold chords on beats 1 and 3.

  • 0’56”-1’10”: Returns to pattern from 0’00”-0’13”. Alto and tenor saxophones solo with a syncopated rhythm.

  • 1’11”-1’24”: Pattern and instrumentation from 0’00”-0’13” is resumed; saxophones drop out and vocal soloist sings again. 1’17”-1’20” vocals are harmonized with a second track. High hat syncopated embellishment at 1’23”.

  • 1’25”-1’27”: Cymbal is struck and let ring, the guitar holds a chord, and the other instruments drop out while the singer mimics an echo again.

  • 1’28”-1’32”: Cymbal hit on beat 1, bass drum used to accent beat 3. Call and response between solo vocalist and backup vocals.

  • 1’33”-1’37”: Returns to pattern from 0’00”-0’13”.

  • 1’37-1’38”: Transition occurs with the piano playing an ascending scale and the drums on the toms.

  • 1’39”-1’48”: Guitar plays single notes within scale while the drums alternate between a crash cymbal and lighter cymbals on beats 1 and 3.

  • 1’49”-1’51”: Vocalist holds note. Drums play light cymbal on beat 1 only. Piano plays an arpeggio while guitar holds chords on beats 1 and 3.

  • 1’53”-2’06”. Returns to pattern from 0’00”-0’13” for all instruments except for saxophones. Saxophones repeat melody from before. Drums again end with 2 syncopated cymbal taps before transition.

  • 2’06”-2’09”: Cymbal is struck and let ring, the guitar holds a chord, and the other instruments drop out while the singer mimics an echo.

  • 2‘10”-2’12”: Cymbal hit on beat 1, bass drum used to accent beat 3. Call and response between solo vocalist and backup vocals.

  • 2’13”-2’18“: Vocalist switches up usual melody and uses a higher pitch with a bit of gravel in his voice. Instruments follow the main pattern.

  • 2’19”-2’20”: Piano ascending scale and drums on toms to transition again.

  • 2’20”-2’29“: Crash cymbal starts section; every 1st and 3rd beat accented with snare. Guitar solos in background behind vocals while a rhythm guitar strums on beat with the bass. Ends with cymbal on last note.

  • 2’30”-2’32”: Vocal soloist holds out note while guitar plays a few notes. Bass drum hits on beat 1 of the second measure, with guitar strumming on the same beat.

  • 2’33”-2’47”: Resumes main pattern while vocalist occasionally interjects. Saxophones resume their melody.

  • 2’48”-: Piano plays in a modulated key. A car revs its engines persistently in the background. Drums hit a beat on the toms at 2’55”, 2’57”, and syncopate beats at 2’59”-3’03”. Toms are played in double time on the beat for the transition.

  • 3’02”- 3’25: Crash cymbal hit at the beginning of the new section. Cymbal hit on the beat, with snare on beats 1 and 3. Embellishments on toms. Guitars play the modulated melody with the piano in unison as the music slowly fades.
