Unit 1 project: Electricity Usage

Follow the directions below to investigate the electricity usage and cost for common household items, as well as consider ways to save money on electricity. Be prepared to submit your answers to the following questions via Assessments>Quizzes in D2L.

  1. Go to the internet energy use calculator at http://www.energyusecalculator.com/calculate_electrical_usage.htm to estimate the cost per day and cost per year for each item listed below. From the energy use calculator website, click on each item listed, and then enter the values provided in the table for power usage (in watts) and number of hours left on each day, and use the average default price for the calculator of 10 cents/kWh ($0.10/kWh). Then click the Calculate button, and fill in the table for Energy/day, Cost each day, and Cost each year. Note the calculator gives cost in dollars, you will need to round your answers to the nearest cent (two decimal places). When you choose each item, take some time to read about the item’s power use and costs. You may get some ideas from here about how to save energy with that particular item. Investigate the electricity usage and cost for some of the other devices on the calculator site that you commonly use, and think of one or more ways you and your family or roommates could save money on electricity usage.
