Ronald M H BoydThe Reverend Ronald Boyd (1982 approx), who has been Minister of Dumbarton West Kirk for several years, has been called to Troon Portland Church. Ronald's parents, Eric Boyd and Nan (née Mitchell) both deceased, were also FPs. William BoydBill Boyd (1930s) died on 5th January 2000. Bill graduated BSc on leaving school and during the war he served in the RAF, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He is survived by his wife and a daughter and two sons. His daughter and sons are also FPs of Bell Baxter. Gilford Bradley(1947- BBHS 1959-65 The following article was published in the Fife Herald on 5 August 2010: A CUPAR volunteer is getting ready to take the plunge in a nerve-jangling charity challenge! Giff Bradley (63) will be abseiling down the side of Blair Castle in Perthshire in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support later this month. Giff and his wife Diane lost their daughter Sharon to cancer 18 years ago, at the age of just 15. A lump in Sharon's stomach was diagnosed as a rare form of liver cancer, which was operated on at the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh and was followed by a lengthy course of chemotherapy. Sadly, the cancer returned and became terminal after spreading to Sharon's lungs. Giff, who volunteers as a speaker for Macmillan, is hoping to raise money for the charity in recognition of their support throughout Sharon's illness. He'll be among the first people ever to abseil off the tower at Blair Castle during next month's international horse trials. The trials take place over two days, beginning on Friday, August 27, and Macmillan is the event's chosen charity this year. Giff trained as a PE teacher at Jordanhill College after leaving Bell Baxter, and Sharon was also a pupil at the School.
John Brand1948- BBHS 1960-3 The following article appeared in the Fife Herald on 5 April 2013: by LIZ ROUGVIE liz.rougvie@jpress.co.uk THE local legal fraternity - and their Clients - have bade farewell to a 'weel kent' face at Cupar Sheriff Court. Former policeman John Brand retired last week after 12 years äs court officer, where he was so highly-regarded that even the regular offenders had a whip-round for him! John (65) was honoured at a gathering in the court's Jury room attended by around 50 people, including Sheriff Charles Macnair and his predecessor, Sheriff George Evans. He joined the court Service in 2000 after 30 years äs a police of ficer, latterly in the post of crime prevention and cornmunity safety officer for north east Fife. A Fifer born and bred, John attended Pitlessie Primary and Bell Baxter High Schools, leaving at the age of 15 to take up a job at the now defunct Gillies and Henderson Agricultural Engineers in Cupar. He worked there for seven years before joining Fife Constabulary in 1970. Two years later he married his wife Martha, and the couple have made their home in Balmalcolm, where they're well-known in the Community. John is an eider at Howe of Fife Parish Church and a member of Kettle Community Council as well as an enthusiastic sup porter of Kettle Flower Show. He's also a committee member of Age Concern Cupar, giving up his time every Christmas Day to take on the role of Santa, Now the couple are looking forward to spending more time gardening and enjoying the company of their two grandchildren, James (5) and Martha, nine months. John leaves Cupar Sheriff Court at a time of uncertainty, as it's facing the axe as part of a cost-cutting exercise by the Scottish Court Service. An official announcement about its future is due to be made next week, April 9 - and he's hoping against hope that the outcome will be a positive one. "Because of its position in north east Fife Cupar is a very busy "court on a daily basis," he said. "It would be a backward step and a trevsety for local justice if the Scottish Court Service close it. I hope common sense will prevail." Robert BrandRobin Brand (1940) died in hospital after a long illness on 29th January 2004. (He had been unable to attend the Markinch Reunion in September 2003). On leaving School, Robin graduated in Engineering at St Andrews Univer sity and made Civil Engineering his career. In 1964 he was Depute Burgh Engineer for the town of Kirkcaldy. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, née Gover, also a former pupil, and 2 children, both married. Susan BrandSusan Brand (1990) left her job in the financial sector in 2002 to take time to travel the world and she has been working for a time in a gold mine in New Zealand. (Not many of our FPs be come gold diggers in the literal sense! There may probably be some of the metaphorical kind!). Susan was hoping to go on to have a working holiday in Australia. Alasdair BreckenridgeBBHS 1948-54 During the Session 1952-3 the School took part in the "Top of the Form" quiz on the radio. The School team of David Lindsay, Alasdair Breckenridge, Robert Bridges and Graeme Dallas was defeated by Leytonstone High School for Girls. In 1997 Alasdair Breckenridge was with the North West Regional Health Authority in a position akin to that of Chief Medical Officer for Scotland. Alasdair was previously Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at Liverpool University. Professor Breckenridge was Chairman of the Committee on the Safety of Medicines from 1999 to 2003, a role which he relinquished when he became chair of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on its creation in April 2003. He became Chair of the Emerging Science and Bioethics Advisory Committee when that body came into being in May 2012. Previously, he was a member of the Adverse Reactions Group, and the Subcommittee on Adverse Reactions to Vaccines and Immunisation of the CSM. Between 1992 and 1996 he was a member of the Medical Research Council. He has worked closely as assessor to various programmes of the European Union, on committees of the World Health Organisation, and within the International Union of Pharmacology. Between 1987 and 1999, he was a member or the chairman of local and regional health authorities in the north-west of England. He has held visiting professorships in Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and India. Sir Alasdair is married with two children. He is not affiliated to any political parties. In 2003 he was awarded the Honorary Degree of DSc at St Andrews University “to mark his contribution to medical science par ticularly in the study and use of medicines”. Alasdair went from St An drews University to Hammersmith Hospital and to the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London where he did most of his postgraduate training. In 1974 he was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine with Honours at Dun dee University and was in the same year appointed Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at Liverpool University. He is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians both of London and of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a founding Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sci ences. He has been a central figure in the WHO in work concerning the drug treatment of HTV and of malaria. He was appointed CBE in 1995 and knighted in 2003.
