POPULATION SHIFTS

  1. Farmers move to cities in the North looking for jobs

  2. People move into GA from other states to work in industries

  1. GA’s economy grew rapidly

  2. Atlanta became very prosperous – most factory jobs in the Atlanta area

  3. Savannah port continued to grow; one of the largest ports in the U.S. today

  4. 12 military bases employee over 100,000

  5. Auto assembly & carpet industries important to the economy

CHANGES IN AGRICULTURE



  1. Tractors make farming easier; sharecroppers no longer needed

  2. Dairy & livestock industries improve

  3. Poultry farms grow – largest part of GA’s agricultural production today

  4. Crop diversity – cotton less important; farmers grow peanuts, soybeans, & tobacco

CHANGES IN URBAN GEORGIA



  1. Atlanta, Savannah, Macon, & Columbus grow in population

    1. Housing, water, electricity, sewage, & law enforcement in greater demand

2. Transportation in Atlanta move goods & people through the state

a. Major RR hub for the southeast

b. New Interstate Hwy system (I-75, I-20, I-85); I-95 links GA to the eastern

seaboard & New England

c. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport- employs over 55,000 people & is the

largest employer in GA; brings visitors passing through

d. MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) – helped relieve traffic

congestion (built in the 1960’s)

3. GA’s Deepwater Ports

a. Savannah – major container operations & general cargo from around the world

b. Brunswick – automobiles & general goods

c. Ports open up the state for trade with the world
