| Japanese American Loyalty
In the camps they were questioned about their loyalty, but Germans and Italians were not.
In order to prove their loyalty many Nisei, 2nd generation Japanese, joined the military. As the war dragged on, the government had no qualms about using Japanese Americans to fight. Some served in the Pacific as interpreters and intelligence officers.
The most famous combat unit was the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (Go For Broke). They were the most decorated unit in the Army and suffered one of the highest casualty rates of all units in the war. Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii moved up through the ranks to the officer corps, one of the few. He lost an arm fighting in Italy.
Not all accepted internment peacefully. There were some riots in the camps and 300 Japanese American men refused induction into the military.
Decades later (1988) the government apologized and gave surviving internees $20,000.
