Charles & James Hargrove in the Rev War
Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northwest Arkansas, published in 1889. Joshua recounted that his grandfather, “James Hargrove, enlisted as a private in the Revolutionary
War, and rose to the rank of colonel. He was with Gen. Greene and participated in many fiercely contested battles. He was a native of England.”
This account of James Hargrove’s service illustrates how family histories can become distorted and exaggerated over time. Military records show that while James was indeed
“with Gen. Greene,” during the war, as were most South Carolina militiamen. And while it is probably true that James “participated in many fiercely contested battles,” he remained a private and never “rose to the rank of colonel.” Also, we already shown, while James was of
English descent, but himself was actually a native of Virginia not England.
