Advantages and Disadvantages of networks? (Click here for more info…)

Networks have become vital because they allow groups of users to exchange and share information very easily. Networks bring people and data together, which improves productivity.

The advantages of using networks include:

Whilst there are many positives to connecting devices in order better share and process data there are also disadvantages.

The disadvantages of using networks include:

Network Topologies (Click here for more info…)

All computers communicate in the same way. They prepare a signal to send to an address and place it on a transmission medium (i.e. wire/wifi signal). However, the way in which the computers on a network are laid out varies and can have effects on the cost and performance of a network. There are three topologies you need to know about – bus, ring and star.

Topology #1 – Bus Network

Describe, in your own words, how a bus network connects all of the attached devices.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:
Can you name any advantages and disadvantages of a bus network?

Topology #2 – Ring Network

Describe, in your own words, how a ring network connects all of the attached devices.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:
Can you name any advantages and disadvantages of a ring network?

Topology #3 – Star Network

Describe, in your own words, how a star network connects all of the attached devices.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:
Can you name any advantages and disadvantages of a star network?

Extension 1: Show your understanding…

#1) List three resources that are commonly shared on a network

#2) Explain what is meant by the term “client computer”

#3) A small company has a tight budget and four workers. Describe the type (and topology) of network which is suitable for them and explain your answer.

Extension 2: Further Research…

For computers to be able to communicate, they need to be able to:

Protocols are the rules used for devices to communicate. Many protocols have been developed over the years. The key one you need to know about is TCIP/IP.

Describe, in your own words, what TCIP/IP protocols are, where they are used and why they are needed.

End of tasks.
