Teaching a group of people a new language is a challenge, teaching them a programming language is even a bigger challenge, but having to do so through distance education become a life changing mission for any lecturer.
Some of the numerous problems being faced by the distance educator include:

  1. Student access to a computer

  2. Student access to the internet

  3. Programming languages and their licenses

  4. Availability of compilers

The above mentioned only include hardware and software problems, which through a bit of hard work from both the student and the lecturer can be resolved. The major problem, however, is getting the message across to the student. How do you give assistance to a student struggling with a program when they are hundreds of kilometers away? Though there are wonderful software and books available on all programming languages none of them are really geared for giving practical training over a distance.

This paper proposes some solutions to the above problems gained through the experiences of distance educators.
