Cold War- a state of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union without actual fighting, which divided the world into two camps.
Instability- unpredictable
Cease-fire- break in fighting
Capitalism- economic system in which there is private ownership of businesses
Containment- restrict expansion of communism
Iron Curtain- The political and military barrier that isolated Soviet controlled countries of Eastern Europe after World War II.
NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization, countries that joined NATO agreed to protect one another and to defend against a possible Soviet invasion of Western Europe.
Warsaw Pact-In response to NATO, the Soviet Union created an alliance of its own with the Communists governments of Eastern Europe.
Domino Theory- in 1950s and 1960s a theory that if one country fell to communism, neighboring countries would also start to fall to communism (imagine falling dominos).
