@ Raymond Lloyd

Every year since 1980, I have drawn up lists of major anniversaries of the democracies. Below I list those for 2014 which may be of particular interest both to travelers and, because this paper is also timed for the Historic Houses AGM, to guardians of architectural heritage. Every year I also list centenaries of distinguished women of History: again I list a selection for 2014 (A).
In my paper for the 2011 World Travel Market, I mentioned that the Caucasus was the only major part of the world I had yet to visit. In May 2013 I travelled to Georgia and Armenia. A full list of the 225 countries I have visited in work for development, democracy and women’s advancement is attached (B), while on www.shequality.spaces.live.com may be found my post-2005 digital photos of travel and work in Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Moldova, Morocco, Netherlands, North Cyprus, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, the USA and Wales.
Also in 2011, I offered as occasions for remembrance a list of approaching anniversaries of attacks and mishaps to travelers, tourists and migrants: this is now updated for 2014 (C). Finally, every month I describe my work and travel in The Parity Democrat, work and travel in Poland found in No 203 for November 2013 (D).

Introduction
In this 203rd monthly issue of The Parity Democrat, I highlight the November 2013 dates from my four anniversary lists: 13 of the Democracies, 3 of Women’s Empowerment, 9 Women’s Centenaries, and 12 new Birthdays of Distinguished Living Women. The attachment of the month is the paper prepared for the 36th Triennial Congress of the International Alliance of Women held in London from 9 to 13 September 2013.
Travel from 5 to 10 September took me to Lithuania for the informal meetings of EU foreign ministers in Vilnius and EU Agri ministers throughout the country. I visited the Vilnius Genocide Museum on soviet deportations, and the nazi death camp at Kaunas Ninth Fort, where 70 000 children women and men were individually murdered. I was very moved by the several monuments to Chiune Sugihara (1900-86), the Japanese vice-consul in Kaunas who issued visas to some 6000 Jewish families to save them from the Holocaust. Before leaving for Vilnius I had alerted as many persons I could to the UN’s first annual International Day of Charity on 5 September, the day chosen being that on which Mother Teresa (1910-97) died.
Travel in England led me to the Southampton Boat Show with my Burmese friends Susu and Justin, and at Guildford Cathedral, Arundel Churches, and Chichester Cathedral with my Friends of Russell Square. In Chichester I paid my respects at the memorials to two recent Bishops, Eric Kemp (1915-2009), one of my tutors at Exeter College Oxford, and George Bell (1883-1958), who spoke out both against nazism and Allied bombing of German civilians.
I also went to the Tower of London for Germany Barrier Free, on efforts to make historic sites accessible to disabled persons; to Top Drawer 2013 at Olympia, a favourite design show; and to Earls Court for the annual Jewellery Fair. At the National Portrait Gallery I visited an exhibition by the photographer David Bailey, and the paintings of Laura Knight (1877-1970), and at the European Bank a jazz concert from Central Europe. I drew the attention of the Hungarian musician to the fact that 2014 marked the 70th anniversary of the 400 000 Jewish children women and men deported to Auschwitz, the last major anniversary when a yet-to-be-composed requiem could be heard by escapees and other survivors.
Much of my free time in September was taken up in listening to the radio, to two One Day International cricket matches with Australia; and watching TV, to the remarkable Rebuilding the World Trade Center, and the Forgotten 9/11 Hero, both of which I can now protect on the new BT View; to Scenic Steam Railways of North America and New Zealand; and to Henry Cole’s Great Motorcycle Rides around Scandinavia and the United States – to many places I have visited, though in my case by car and coach.

In the early 1940s many of your privately-owned Historic Houses accommodated Allied Forces prior to the liberation of Europe:  6 June 2014 will mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the last major anniversary while participants are still alive:  will the Historic Houses Association make a list or trail of such buildings, among other purposes, to attract North American and European visitors?
6.11.13 London World Travel Market Panel from Nicaragua PD WTM-11
I have twice visited Nicaragua, both before and after the 1972 Managua earthquake: indeed in the 1970s I commissioned a UN medal, portraying as Ceres the Roman goddess of agriculture, Sonia Navas, the daughter of Enrique Navas, the head Spanish translator in FAO: given the importance of agro-forestry in your country, what progress have you made in planning a Pacific-Caribbean Canal?
6.11.13 London World Travel Market Panel from Assisi Umbria Italy PD WTM-11
On 4 May 1979, as Margaret Thatcher entered the Prime Minister’s residence in 10 Downing Street, she quoted from St Francis of Assisi:
Where there is discord, may we bring harmony.

Where there is error, may we bring truth.

Where there is doubt, may we bring faith.

And where there is despair, may we bring hope.
While these words may not have originated with St Francis, they express the practices which many people attribute to him: might you therefore record them in some form of memorial, if possible in time for a visit by a British leader when Italy holds the presidency of the European Union from July to December 2014?

In February 2013 I spent a delightful month in West Bengal, first visiting my friends in Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, and then, on the recommendation of Bengali friends in Delhi, staying again at the Nature Cure and Yoga Centre in Konchoki south of Kolkata, now for three weeks: this is much better value than the health spas in, say, Rajasthan, so will you emphasize in your tourism literature the very good value offered to visitors in West Bengal?

2014 marks the 2500th anniversary of the death of Buddha in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh: the neighbouring state of Andra Pradesh has some 40 major Buddhist sites, as mapped in your tourist brochure: how does Andra Pradesh plan to commemorate this anniversary in 2014?

It is good to welcome here both yourself and the woman minister for Attica & Spetsos: at one time another woman from Spetsos, Admiral Lascarina Bouboulina use to b portrayed on Greek notes and coins: now it is only men who feature on current Greek euro coins: do you plan to restore the portrait of Lascarina, among other reasons, to attract women visitors to Greece during the January-June 2014 Greek presidency of the European Union?
