Page xviii better understand the discoveries and accomplishments that have earned him prominence and respect not only among linguists but among members of the deaf communitya relatively rare accomplishment fora hearing person.
It is tempting to resort to the vocabulary of eulogy to describe Bill Stokoe: brilliant, passionate, courageous however, such words are powerless after all to capture the essence of this complex man. No biographer can tell a life fully and accurately, but I
hope I have succeeded in telling enough about Bill Stokoe to enable others to knowat least a little betterof the rich, full, and productive life that he has lived.
