Mrs. Blanchard was a member of Praise Cathedral Church of God.
Surviving are her husband, C. W. Blanchard of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Bonnie Blanchard of Statesville, N.C.; a daughter, Brenda Blanchard of Charlotte, N.C.; and two grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, W. D. Hearn of Dublin, Va., Herman Hearn of Pulaski, Va., and Herbert Hearn of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and two sisters, Grace Hill of St. Augustine, Fla., and Ruby Correll of Jacksonville, Fla.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Remembrance Chapel at Woodlawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jerry Madden officiating. Entombment will be in Remembrance Chapel Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 301 University Ridge, Suite 5300, Greenville, SC 29601.

Ruth Roope Blanche, 87, of 5813 Wilderness Road, Newbern, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in Pulaski Community Hospital. Born August 23, 1915, in Newbern, she was the daughter of the late Dora Swaim Roope and William Howard Roope. She was a member of the Newbern United Methodist Church, a volunteer at the Pulaski Community Hospital, active in the Newbern Community Club, a driver for the motorpool at the New River Ordinance Plant during W.W. II and had worked at Seagle's Pharmacy in her early years. In her business life, she worked for Sears as an auditor for many years and had traveled in seven states with her work. Miss Roope was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert L. Roope, Billie B. Roope and Charles Roope; two sisters, Ollie Cooke Hancock and Lillie Roope King. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Newbern Cemetery with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from noon until 1:30 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Newbern United Methodist Church or the charity of choice.

BLANKENSHIP, Willie Elizabeth Wymer, (Billie), 82, of the Crandon Community, Bland, Va., died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Wheatland Hills Retirement Center, Radford. Billie was born October 9, 1920, in Marion, Va., the daughter of the late James Rhudy Wymer and Bessie Mae Carrico. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Thomas (Bill) Blankenship, Sr., in 1985; sister and brother, Mary Wymer Dixon and Sydney Wymer. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Barbara Blankenship, Pulaski, Va., Harold T., Jr. and Ella Jean Blankenship, Woodstock, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca B. and Kenneth Brim, Christiansburg, Va.; daughter, Michelle Blankenship-Taylor, Roanoke, Va.; grandchildren and spouses, Jennifer B. and Jeff Repass, Jeanette B. and Jeff Jones, all of Pulaski, Kristol B. and Mark Dudley of Roanoke, Harold T. Blankenship, III of Alexandria, Va.; great-grandchildren, Kenley Elizabeth and Audrey Rebecca Jones (Nannie's special twins). Other survivors include a sister, Josephine W. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Henry Allen Conley and the Rev. Joe M. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, Va. BOARD, Henry Cobbs, 73, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 23, 1998. Henry was born on March 18, 1924 in Franklin County, Va. to Onley and Essyebelle Laprade Board. He served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII. He was a retired Virginia State Trooper with 33 years as one of Virginia's finest. He was a longtime member of McDaniel Lodge #86 AF & AM and the Order of the Eastern Star. A beloved father and grandfather, Henry leaves behind many to celebrate his life. He is survived by his wife, Pauline J. Board, Christiansburg; daughter, Vicki Board Wert, Christiansburg; sons and daughters-in-law, Russell A. and Sandra Board, Japan, Bruce N. and Susan Board, Jason Dale Board, all of Christiansburg, Charlsie J. and Doug Proffitt, Tampa, Fla., Tina J. and Dave Cunningham, Christiansburg; grandchildren, Kelly E. Mrs. Roy O. Bond, 74, of Double Gates, Bluefield, Va., died Tuesday in a
Bluefield hospital following a short illness. She was the widow of Capt.
Roy Bond, who for many years was a member of the Bluefield Police
Department.
She was a native of Pulaski County, Va, and was a member of Edgemont Baptist
Church in Bluefield.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Hazel B. Robertson of Double Gates; two
sons, Randel bond of Bluefield and Wade Bond of Roanoke, Va.; three sisters,
Mrs. Myrtle Anderson of Cincinnati, Ohio and Mrs. Pearl Smith of Pulaski;

B. White of Princeton and Dick White of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hawkins Funeral
Chapel in Bluefield with Rev. Richard Ratliff officiating. Burial will

Mrs. V.A. (Alma) Bond, 87, of 113 Dudley Street in Bluefield, Va., died
Wednesday afternoon in a Glenwood Park nursing home following a long
illness.
She was born in Pulaski, Va., a daughter of the late John and Rosa Pagan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor A. Bond, In August 1969.
She was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Bluefield, Va., and was a
member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Helen Armour of Bluefield, Va., and
Mrs. Gerald (Vivian) Hughes of Bluefield; four sons, James Bond of Texas
City, TX, Curtis Bond of Santa Fee, NM, Leonard Bond of Carls Bad, NM and
Kenneth Bond of Decatur, GA; three sisters, Mrs. Homer Lester, Mrs. Ruth
Sanders and Mrs. Georgia White, all of Pulaski; two brothers, Homer Pagan of
Pulaski and Gilbert Pagan of Akron, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, 20
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Dudley
Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with Rev. Allen Thompson officiating.
Burial will follow in Monte Vista Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Lampert, Jim Rose, Jimmy Asbury, Howard Dean, Marvin
White and Luke Mahood.

Mark Bower, age 85 of 1325 Hopkins Drive, Pulaski died suddenly Sunday, June 29, 2003 in a multi car/truck accident near Louisville, Kentucky (Shelby County) on a trip to visit a nephew, Jay Brallier in Victor, Idaho. Born August 24, 1917 in Noble County, Indiana, he was the son of the late Elder Clarence Elsworth Bower and Iva Elizabeth Brown Bower. His first wife and children’s mother, Helen Frances Via Bower who preceded him in death in 1975, one brother, Dallas Kay Bower and one sister, Ruby Bower Brallier, a mother and father-in-law Jerry N. Via and Lala Flora Via, a brother-in-law, Richard Paul Via, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Via Koogler also precede him in death. Mr. Bower was a graduate of Winter Park High School (Winter Park, Florida), Class of 1936. He attended Bridgewater College where he met his wife, Helen. He served on the Board of Trustees of Bridgewater College for 20 years. He also graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1938 where he obtained his degree in funeral service. He and his first wife, Helen Via Bower purchased Strickler’s Funeral Homes, Inc. from Stanley and Bessie Strickler in 1970 which is now trading as Bower Funeral Chapels in Pulaski and Dublin where his family owns and operates the family business. He was honored in 1994 at the Virginia Funeral Directors Association Annual convention as a “Golden Licensee: for those active in funeral service for fifty years, and had been a licensed Funeral Director for over 60 years. Mr. Bower was born and raised in the Brethren faith and was a life member of the Church of the Brethren in Florida and Virginia where he had served as a Deacon. He was a long time member of the Dublin Lions Club. Surviving: wife, Alberta Thompson Bower and her family, Pulaski. His family: one daughter and son-in-law, Dana Bower Rygas and Alex Rygas, Pulaski; one son and daughter-in-law, Dallas Paul and Betty Bower, Front Royal, Va.; four grandsons, Spencer Alexandre Rygas, Pulaski and great granddaughter, Anna Lauren, Aaron Christopher Rygas, Pulaski, Adrian Mark Rygas, Pulaski, David P. Bower, Roanoke; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Christine and George Merriman, Fieldale, Va.; sister-in-law, Frances K. Via, Daleville, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday 11 a.m. at the First Church of the Brethren with Rev. John Collins and Rev. David Hoover (a long time friend) officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke with Dr. David Hoagland officiating in Roanoke, Va. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bobwhite Blvd., Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements.
