| David W. Detjen Partner
David Detjen, a partner in the New York office, is the leader of the firm’s German Practice Team. His practice is concentrated on the representation of European clients regarding U.S. legal matters, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, licensing of intellectual property and general corporate and commercial issues.
Mr. Detjen is the editor-in-chief of the International Law Practicum, a publication of the New York State Bar Association, and he is the author of The Germans in Missouri, 1900 - 1918, University of Missouri Press, 1985; Establishing a United States Joint Venture with a Foreign Partner, Matthew Bender & Co.: 1988, 1990, and 1993; United States Joint Ventures with International Partners, Juris Publishing, 2000; and two German-English bilingual handbooks for the German American Chamber of Commerce: Das Handelsvertreter – und Eigenhaendlerrecht in den USA/Distributorship Agreements in the United States, 1983 and 1989; and Lizenzierung von Technologie und Warenzeichen in den USA/Licensing Technology and Trademarks in the United States, 1988 and 1997.
Mr. Detjen is a member of the American Bar Association and its Section on Business Law and its Section on International Law and Practice; The New York State Bar Association and its International Section (and vice-chairman and a member of the executive committee of that section); The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis; The Association of the Bar of the City of New York (and a member of the Council on International Affairs of that association); and The German American Law Association.
David is a former member of the board of trustees of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition, David is a member of the National Council (board of overseers) of the Washington University School of Law, and in 1998 received a distinguished alumni award from that school. He is also a member of the National Council of the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts of Washington University and a member of the Collections Committee of the University’s Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. He is also a vice-chairman of the board of trustees and corporate secretary of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University and vice-chairman of the German-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc in New York City. He is also Chairman of the board of directors of the Friends of Goethe New York, Inc., a member of the board of directors of the American Friends of Bucerius, a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Friends of Atlantik-Bruecke e.V. Foundation, Inc., a member of the board of trustees of the Arthur M. Burns Fellowship Inc., and a member of the board of directors of the Leo Baeck Institute. He is a member of the American Council on Germany in New York and of the Atlantik-Bruecke in Berlin, Germany, and the chairman of the board of directors of the German Forum in New York. He also serves as an elected delegate to the Representative Town Meeting (municipal legislature) of Greenwich, Connecticut.
He received his J.D. from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, where he was editor-in-chief of the Washington University Law Quarterly and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He received his A.B., magna cum laude, from the College of Arts and Sciences of Washington University, and in 2010 was honored as a distinguished alumnus of the College. He also studied law and history at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität in Tübingen, Germany.
Mr. Detjen is admitted to practice in the States of New York and Missouri.
Has represented German and European clients, either as buyers or sellers, in over 50 joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions, including auction sales.
Serves as outside general counsel to the U.S. operations of various European companies, in various industries, including one of Europe's largest manufacturers of skin creams, bandages and tapes; Germany's largest brewer; and a leading European manufacturer of specialty papers.
