Principal’s Report

During the last school vacation the school completed a major upgrade to our computer network. All the computers were replaced in the Computer Resource Centre and the library at a cost of about $40,000.00. In the world we are living in, computers and a variety of other technologies are playing an ever increasing role. As such it is extremely important that our students are prepared for a technology rich future. At Ardeer South Primary School we are ensuring that our students have ready access to computers throughout the school ¨C in their classrooms, the library as well as the Computer Resource Centre. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development guidelines set a ratio of one computer for every five students. We have one computer for every 2.6 students.

Habits of Mind

Our next habit in this newsletter is ‘Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations’. As we grow older, it is natural for adults to draw on their earlier life experiences when faced with a problem. While children don’t have the same life experiences as adults, this habit is encouraging them to use the knowledge they have gained and apply it to situations. An example might be when children have difficulty at school in the yard, they are encouraged to use our Wheel of Choice. Children who use this habit could apply the Wheel of Choice strategies when faced with a similar difficulty at home.
Parent Opinion Surveys

The use of opinion data to monitor school performance is a very important step towards making our school the best it can possibly be. In recent years, we have conducted annual and anonymous opinion surveys for staff, students and parents and use the information gained to further school improvements. On Monday 25th August 2008 forty randomly selected families will receive a parent opinion survey and we ask that these families return the completed survey to school by Friday 29th August.

Asthma ¨C Correct Use of Puffers and Spacers

New research from the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research has shown that up to 90 % of people on asthma medications are using their puffers (Metered Dose Inhalers) incorrectly leading to poor asthma control, increased hospital visits and increased cost of treatment.

Everyone should use a spacers when using a puffer (for both reliever and preventer puffers). Using a spacer is significantly more effective than a puffer on its own. The medication is delivered more efficiently into the small airways in the lungs where it is needed (approximately over 3 times more effective). Less medication is deposited in the mouth, reducing the side effects associated with preventer medications.
How to correctly use your spacer and puffer:

Remove the cap from the puffer mouthpiece

Hold the puffer upright and shake

Fit puffer mouthpiece into the spacer (at the opening opposite to the mouthpiece)

Breathe out, tilt the chin up

Put the spacer mouthpiece in your mouth and create a seal with your lips

Press the puffer to release one puff into the spacer

Breathe in and out through the spacer for 4 normal breathes

If more puffs are needed repeat steps 6 and 7

Replace the cap on the puffer

School Uniform ¨C What do you think?

At Ardeer South we have a compulsory uniform policy that requires students to be dressed in school uniform every day. Where that is not possible on a particular occasion, we require a note from parents. At the end of each term, a note is sent offering parents the opportunity to purchase new items of uniform. We also keep a small amount of stock on hand for emergency situations. Mrs Miles is our uniform co-ordinator and she regularly meets with our uniform supplier to discuss current trends in uniform. We sell our uniform at a minimum cost to support parents financially. This year we are reviewing our policy and we would welcome any feedback from parents on our current uniform. Please fill in the slip below and return it to the office if you wish to make any comments.
