AUDIO: It can be seen that to generate 6.2 units of light from a relatively efficient fluorescent bulb, we used up 100 units of energy from coal from the ground. This also means that during various conversion steps 93.8 units of energy is dissipated into the environment.

A similar analysis on Automobile shown in Figure 3-7 and Table 3-3 shows that only about 10% of the energy in the crude oil in the ground is in fact turned into mechanical energy moving people.
