Background of the Course

Over the last few decades, we have witnessed dramatic changes in the economic environment firms are facing in the waves of
globalization.
• Firms are now in a more international playground where consumers and producers are located all over the globe.
– Driving forces:
trade liberalization, declining transportation costs,
ICT revolution, the fall of the previous Soviet block…
• We also experience recent backlashes against globalization.
– US-China trade conflicts, Brexit, COVID-19 Pandemic…
• The course focuses on how those changes have affected the way firms behave in the market place from a global view.

Aims of This Course
• Tentative plan: 3 modules, 12 inter-connected topics. 1 topic per week.
• Get you familiar with globalization
and how it affects firms, for example:
– Why are some firms involved in international activities? What are their strategies?
– How much productivity,
employment, and consumer welfare do global firms contribute to?
• Focus on the interaction between globalization and firms’ decisions.
– Combines theories,
recent evidence, and practical business cases.
• Give you a deep understanding of firms’ internationalization strategies and the challenges faced by internationalized firms.
• Enable you to analyze practical business situations in a globalized world.
