President’s report on Activities:

  • Salmon runs continue to increase during 2013 on both Middle Brook and Terra Nova River.

  • Salmon counting fences expected to operate in 2014 on both Middle Brook and Terra Nova River but will be discontinued on Salmon Brook in Glenwood.

  • FABEC has applied for 5 student summer positions in 2014. Additionally, The Development Association has applied for 2 student summer positions to work on FABEC 2014 projects.

  • During 2013 FABEC supported a proposal by the Town of Terra Nova for retention angling access on two areas in the mid section of the Terra Nova River watershed. One area lies above and below the old Terra Nova River dam site and the other lies above and below 8-Mile Bridge upriver from Terra Nova Lake. It is anticipated a positive response will be received on this request and the final decision will be published by DFO in the 2014 Angler’s Guide.

  • In 2013 FABEC worked with DFO Regional Office in an effort to clarify the location of catch and release and retention areas on the lower Terra Nova River. As a result, DFO installed signs along the river to more clearly identify the location of various pools.

  • FABEC submitted a proposal to the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation (ASCF) and DFO’s Grants and Contributions program to operate a counting trap at Mollyguajeck Falls on the upper Terra Nova River to count salmon migration to the upper watershed. The purpose of this counting project is to establish the actual number of fish going through the Molloyguajeck fishway and thus gain insight into the effectiveness of the Terra Nova salmon enhancement project that operated from 1984 to 2001. Additional financial and in-kind support for the project was committed by Terra Nova National Park, DFO Science, the towns of Glovertown, Terra Nova, Traytown and FABEC. The total project cost was estimated at $76,675. Unfortunately, ASCF did not approve our application, indicating that it had insufficient funds to support the project in 2014. However, it has encouraged FABEC to resubmit the application for 2015.

  • During 2013 FABEC continued with efforts to recommend a freeze on cabin development in the Middle Brook watershed above Square Pond. The Land Management Division has not responded to our numerous requests to support our proposal. FABEC will continue to press government for resolution on this issue.

  • In 2012 FABEC developed a survey for Middle Brook trout anglers to gauge opinions on trout management options. To date we have not successful obtained sufficient response from anglers to move forward in discussions with the Inland Fish branch of the Wildlife Division.

  • Over the past several years FABEC entered into agreement with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper on 2 MOU’s regarding forestry practices in the Middle Brook and Terra Nova River watersheds. CBPPL is currently looking for release on these MOU’s , however we are not satisfied that CBPPL has satisfactorily carried out its obligations and more work is required by CBPPL for FABEC to sign off the outstanding MOU’s.

  • The Glovertown Employment Assistance Services Office closed in June 2013 as a result of Provincial government cutbacks. The staff of the office , Maxine Gordon, Mike Davis and Debbie Locke, provided enormous assistance to FABEC over the years .FABEC is truly appreciative of their assistance over the years and wish them well in their future careers.

Treasurer’s Report:

The annual financial report for year ending 2013 was reviewed by the treasurer showing total income and expenses for the year. FABEC had a successful year with a surplus of $4582.18 from operations.
