FUNCTIONAL-ACADEMICS-CURRICULUM-FINAL
Guide for Teachers
The curriculum should be responsive to the needs of the learners with special educational needs. One of the curricula offered in the Transition Program is the Functional Academic Skills. The Functional Academic Skills was crafted to address the needs and the aims of the Department of Education in terms to equity. Hence, it is a channel that will affirm and prepare the LSENs for the regular curriculum, transition from one grade level to another for those with severe or profound conditions. This curriculum considers the capacity, needs and abilities of the LSENs keeping in mind the age appropriate skills and competencies of the learners. Baseline will be the results of the checklists, assessment results and the IEP. Special Education Teachers must be aware that preparation of needed requirements will indeed help in the success of the Transition Program. In as much as the transition is focused, the seven domains may not be taken all. Only the needed target learning outcome may be considered and taught.
This curriculum is primarily an activity-based program. The learners’ learning day is structured around daily life activities that are age-appropriate and that prepare learners for productive lives, blending traditional academic work with real life tasks.
