Greetings Fellow Broadcasters!
For all the students, faculty, and administrators on this email list, I hope the 2012-13 academic year has finished on a high note. We’ve all done a lot this year that we can all be proud of!
I am reaching out to you today to encourage you to attend the 2013 New Jersey Broadcasters Association’s 66th Annual Convention on June 19th in Atlantic City. There are many reasons to attend.
One student and an advisor/administrator receive complimentary conference registration packages if they come from a PEP participating paid NJBA member campus station. Free is always good! (Advisors and Administrators over 21 are also invited to the Opening Reception on Tuesday afternoon, and attendance fees are waived.)
Another outstanding reason to be in Atlantic City is to the conference program, which features to three student-broadcaster specific sessions, and an amazing program with industry leaders from around the nation. The NJBA will also be inducting another class of inductees in the newly minted NJBA Hall of Fame.
Here are this year’s thoughtful selections for your student broadcasters to consider:
First Student Broadcaster Seminar: Radio Sales 101: A Fresh Look
Presenter: NJBA Life Member Dick Taylor, CRMC/CDMC, Assistant Professor, WKU School of Journalism & Broadcasting: Today no matter what your job title in a broadcast operation is, you’re in sales. During this session you will learn what makes an effective communicator. Selling today isn’t about “solving problems” or “providing solutions.” Selling today is about influencing change.
Second Student Broadcaster Seminar: Taking Your College Station On The Road: How To Execute A Successful Live Broadcast/Appearance On and Off-Campus.
Learn the ins and outs of this vital aspect of broadcast moderated by NJBA Board Member and GM of 107.7 WRRC-FM, John Mozes. Presenters include Bob Giaquinto, Program Director of WRRC and Jake Tuff, Producer/Production Director.
Third Student Broadcaster Seminar: So You Want to be a Broadcaster?
The best job in the world is also the hardest to get, and keep…and it is not easy! Find out the real deal from people who make it look easy. Join Townsquare’s VP/ News Director Eric Scott (Panel Moderator) and Wayne Cabot of WCBS 880; ABC Radio Network Anchor and National Correspondent Steven Portnoy; NJBA’s First Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient and NJBA Hall of Famer, WOND’s Pinky Kravitz; Matt Ryan, Host/Producer of "Pop Crush Top 20" for PopCrush.com at Townsquare Media and DJ on 94.3 The Point; and Greater Media’s Bert Baron, Program Director/Midday Host –WCTC, NJ for a lively discussion of how to succeed in Radio…by really trying!
Plus there are a host of other content driven selections and panels that are the envy of the industry and they are all right here in New Jersey! (Check out the attached draft program!)
The convention is also a great opportunity for students to network for internships, jobs, and career advice.
Last year, more than 400 broadcasters and 70 students attended the NJBA convention. This year, it would be terrific to have an even stronger showing of students and their mentors. The more we make ourselves known, the more the concerns and aspirations of student broadcasters will be heard throughout the Garden State. And, it is a terrific way to show our support of the NJBA’s student outreach, exemplified by their scholarship opportunities and the establishment of the NJBA Student Division.
All station staff and broadcast students may attend any or all of our Student Sessions without admission charge, however, additional staff and students may purchase additional lunch and breakfast packages (On Registration Form) at substantially discounted fees. And I understand from NJBA President Paul Rotella that this flat-rate fee can be discounted further for PEP participating stations with a financial hardship.
Paul shares our goal of getting as many students as possible to attend the convention and connect with Jersey’s professional broadcasters. (Please feel free to contact either myself or Paul to see if your station qualifies as a PEP participating station.) Paul also said future good faith commitments to play NJBA PEP announcement will be accepted as fulfilling Pep discount requirements. ALL Attendees, complimentary or paid, must complete and submit a Registration Form by May 30, 2013 for admission to any NJBA Conference Sessions or Events.
An NJBA Conference Registration form is attached to this email, which may be duplicated for your convenience. Simply fill it out and fax it to the NJBA at 609-860-0110 by June 1. Special room rates of only $99.00 are available at Caesars if you want to stay over on Tuesday or Wednesday night, but you must make reservations by June 1st. You can do so on the NJBA website: www.njba.com and can be cancelled up to one week before the event.
More details about the convention will also be available at www.njba.com, and you may contact Mary at 609-860-0111 or Mary@njba.com with any questions or special requests.
It should be a great event! I am looking forward to seeing you in Atlantic City on June 18-19th!
All the best,
