Introduction
In cultures where monogamy is mandated, bigamy states the act of entering into a marriage with one person while still have a legally married wife. The marital status of a person doesn’t get altered just by a legal or de facto separation of the couple. In the case of a divorce, the person is considered to be legally married until the divorce is final or complete under the law of the jurisdiction. In a de facto or cohabitation relationship, or that relations where one enters such relationships with a legal marriage, Bigamy laws do not apply to couples in these relations. Each party is free to marry another without falling foul of the bigamy laws If the prior marriage for any reason is void or the couple is not married
In most of the countries that recognise only monogamous marriages, Bigamy is a crime there. Countries that deal with bigamy laws, there legality to the second marriage is not given even if a consent from a prior spouse is taken, which is usually considered void, except Egypt and Iran.
