How to Form Verb Tenses in the ACTIVE voice.

For verbs of the 1st conjugation (-are) and the 2nd conjugations (-ere):

Present Tense: (-----s, is/are-----ing)

1. Go to the 2nd principal part and drop the –re



2. Add the personal endings (**,–s, -t, -mus, -tis, -nt)

** = the 1st person singular is the 1st principal part.



Imperfect Tense: (was/were----ing)

1. Go to the 2nd principal part and drop the –re



2. Add the personal endings (-bam,–bas, -bat, -bamus, -batis, -bant)

Future Tense: (will-------)

1. Go to the 2nd principal part and drop the –re



2. Add the personal endings (-bo,–bis, -bit, -bimus, -bitis, -bunt)

Perfect Tense: (----ed, has/have-----ed)

1. Go to the 3rd principal part and drop the –i.



2. Add the personal endings (**,–isti, -it, -imus, -istis, -erunt)

** = the 1st person singular is 3rd principal part



Pluperfect Tense: (had------ed)

1. Go to the 3rd principal part and drop the –i



2. Add the personal endings (-eram,–eras, -erat, -eramus, -eratis, -erant)

Future Perfect: (will have----ed)

1. Go to the 3rd principal part and drop the –i



2. Add the personal endings (-ero,–eris, -erit, -erimus, -eritis, -erint)

For verbs of the 1st conjugation(-are) and the 2nd conjugations (-ere):

Present Tense: is/are(being) -----ed

1. Go to the 2nd principal part and drop the –re



2. Add the personal endings (-r,–ris, -tur, -mur, -mini, -ntur)

** = the 1st person singular is the 1st principal part + -r



Imperfect Tense: was/were being -----ed

1. Go to the 2nd principal part and drop the –re



2. Add the personal endings (-bar,–baris, -batur, -bamur, -bamini, -bantur)

Future Tense: will be -----ed

1. Go to the 2nd principal part and drop the –re



2. Add the personal endings (-bor,–beris, -bitur, -bimur, -bimini, -buntur)

Perfect Tense: (has/have been -----ed; was -----ed

1. Go to the 4th principal part and drop the –um (=participial stem)



2. Determine if verb is singular or plural.

-if singular…add on to participial stem –us (M), or –a (F), or –um (N)

-if plural…add on to participial stem –i (M), or –ae (F), or –a (N)

- then, add as a separate word sum, es, est, sumus, estis, sunt



Pluperfect Tense: (had been ------ed)

1. Go to the 4th principal part and drop the –um (=participial stem)
