Informative Essay

Development of technology throughout the years

Have you ever wondered how life would be without technology? Technology has progressed greatly throughout the years. It has a great impacts on people and society wouldn’t be the same without the changes made in the technical universe. In the modern day, just about everyone has the three main technologic essentials, phones, television, and computers.

It all dated back to 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, made the first phone call to Thomas Watson. The telephone became one of the most beneficial inventions ever made. It made a great impact because it allows users to communicate without being near each other. Without the telephone, communication wouldn’t be the same in terms of talking to somebody far away from you instantly. The first form of telephone communication was invented by Bell, called the harmonic telegraph. It worked using various tones of frequency to generate messages. Before that, the earliest existing phone was the acoustic telephone. The acoustic telephone worked using two tin cans and a string. The string was used to connect the cans but the voice could only travel the length of the string. For this reason, the telegraph was invented to communicate with others over long distances. The downfall to the telegraph was that you can only use text or symbols. Unlike the telegraph, the telephone, invented by Bell, transmitted voices over electrical wires that were able to expand to great lengths. The First Transatlantic Cable was a cable that emitted communication using a pathway under the Atlantic Ocean. This cable made it possible for people to communicate overseas. Soon after, this cable developed in to a radio based telephone service so people were able to communicate on different channels. This brought up concerns about privacy and interference on the channels you would try communicating on.

Ninety years after its origination, the telephone reached 100 million users globally. The next big way of communication was the wireless cell phone. The accredited inventor of the cell phone is Martin Cooper, who was the inventor of the Motorola Dynatac, which became available to consumers in 1984. The cellular device became a top seller and other companies wanted to get in on the action. By 1993, IBM came up with the first smartphone. This smartphone, called the Simon communicator phone, was used to write papers, email, and had a complete keypad and stylus. Development later led to call phones with cameras by 2002. Competition only made things better as BlackBerry and Apple came up with their smartphones which allowed applications, watching movies, and almost all the essentials to become a handheld computing device. Over the years, the development of the telephone has rapidly increased to better our society with great communication, working purposes, and entertainment.

The television is a system that is used for transmitting visual images and sound that are shown on screens used to broadcast programs for entertainment, information, and education. Experiments that were conducted by different people in the field of electricity led to the development of technology ideas which laid out the foundation for the invention of the television. That is how the invention of the TV began. In the year of 1907, two separate inventors, A.A. Campbell-Swinton from England and a scientist from Russia, Boris Rosing, used a cathode ray tube (CRT) in addition to a mechanical scanner system, to try and create a television system. The experiments of Swinton in 1907 with the CRT electronic television held great potential but they were not able to be converted into reality. The first CTR scanning device was invented by a German scientist named Karl Ferdinand Braun in 1897. He introduced a CRT with a fluorescent screen, known as the cathode ray oscilloscope. The screen would show a visible light when struck by a beam of electrons which showed a picture. Then in 1907, Russian scientist Boris Rosing used a CRT in the receiver of a television system which at the camera end made use of mirror-drum scanning. He then transmitted crude geometrical patterns on the television screen and was the first inventor to do that using the CRT. At last, in 1927, a guy named Taylor Farnsworth was able to invent a working model of television which was based on Swinton’s ideas.

At last there was a television system which is now the basis of all modern TVs. TV broadcasting actually began in 1936, with the BBC. They held an "opening ceremony," some news, then, the first thing that seemed to be a show which was called: "Television Comes to London.” Everything that was able to be broadcasted from then on was only able to be seen in black and white until the 1950’s where color T.V’s were being introduced. Color television had its beginnings in the late 1940s right next to black and white TV’s. Unfortunately it wasn't available until the early 1950s. At the time, two competing color mechanisms were being experimented separately by CBS and RCA (which at the time was affiliated with NBC).The first commercial color broadcast took place June 25th, 1951, when CBS offered an hour-long program entitled “Premiere” a network of five stations located in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington.

Computers are usually thought of to be a screen with a keyboard and mouse, but in a more general sense, a computer is an electronic device that is given a set of instructions to execute. For example, if you have a desktop computer and you want to surf the web, you tell It to open the internet and the computer will communicate within itself using its own language telling it to “open the internet” and it will do so. Desktop computers are usually broken into three main categories; entry level, high end, and gaming. An entry level personal computer (PC) is a computer with minimal amount of specifications because it uses the cheapest amount of parst making it the lowest price. A high end PC is usually for someone with more computer experience, or someone who works in a business. High end PCs range from 700 dollars to about 1300 dollars. A gaming PC is self-explanatory as being for those who play games on their computers. These PCs range from 1000 dollars or more and are usually made with the best quality parts such as a water-based cooling system and a high end video card for the best graphics. These computers are usually the most customizable because it should suit the user’s need in terms of gaming.

Laptops also come as gaming PCs. Unlike desktops, a laptop dos not have a tower and does not require a constant energy source other than that its battery. The first laptop invented was a 3995 dollar Gavilan SC in 1983. This laptop weighed nine pounds and didn’t run as swift as a computer could today. Modern day laptops such as Macintosh by Apple and Alienware are some of the leading high-end PCs that exist.

Computers are very general, in so far as they include smart phones, smart TVs, and tablets all as types of computers. A tablet is a computer with a touch screen that is smaller than a computer but bigger than a cell phone. Due to the wide variety of tablets, there is always a device for just about everyone. If you enjoy reading, you can purchase an Amazon Kindle which is a device personalized for reading and purchasing books but it’s not all about the books alone. It also include various applications that make your daily life run smoothly. If you’re into something vintage, consider Dynabook. The dynabook was invented by a computer scientist name Alan Key in 1970’s and is considered to be the first tablet computer. If you are a more modern person, you would probably prefer an iPad or Galaxy tablet, to match your cellular device perhaps/ All of these copmuters have developed to build a better and more social society using websites such as Facebook and Twitter to “bring people together”. However it is possible our society would be closer if everyone didn’t have their faces buried in their phones and computers and actually spoke to each other.

For some, computers are thought to be the best invention, while others disagree saying it is the root of evil. I think by the way technology is developing, maybe one day it will take over the world. Just about everyone is an owner of a telephone, television, and computer. Without a world of technology, we would all probably be lost.
