Julia M. Downing, 98, Peru, passed away at 11:10 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007 at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, Peru.
She was born in Pulaski County June 17, 1908, the daughter of Monroe and Minnie Baker Conner. She married Ralph F. Downing, and he preceded her in death Aug. 26, 1972. Julia was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella and the Altar and Rosary Society. She retired from Square D Corp. in 1973 and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aero Space Workers. She lived a long and beautiful life. Family and friends were a priority with her and she thoroughly enjoyed family get-togethers and holidays. She filled the room with joy, love and her incredible smile that would warm your heart. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Margaret Funkhouser and her husband Richard, Peru; two sons, Eugene “Rudy” Downing and his wife Claudette, Peru, and Francis J. Downing and his wife Mary Jo, Peru; a brother, Arthur Conner, Lafayette; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by eight brothers, six sisters and one great-grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Julia M. Downing will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Charles Catholic Church, 58 W. Fifth St., Peru, with Rev. Francis I. Kilcline III officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main, Peru. A prayer service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Lonie Marvin Kent “Bud” Garner, 72, Peru, passed away at 2:35 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Sept. 20, 1934 in Peru to Lonie Major and Callie (Clemons) Garner. He married Anna Kay Penner April 16, 1973, and she survives. Lonie served in the U.S. Army and was a custodian at Peru High School. He also was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Brenda L. Moore and husband Ed, Arkansas, and Beth Ann Brech and husband Ken, Utah; a son, Bryan M. Garner and wife Susie, Arkansas; a brother-in-law, Rick Penner, Nashville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 315 S. Business 31, with Bishop Ken Giles officiating. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Cass County. A military committal service will be provided by the Miami County Military Rites Team. Shirley Ann Myers, 77, Roann, passed away at 3:12 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash. She was born Feb. 17, 1930 in State College, Pa. to Howard and Catherine (Harpster) Hopkins. She married Lowell R. “Dick” Myers July 2, 1951, and he preceded her in death May 6, 2007. Shirley served in the U.S. Navy Waves and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. She also was a homemaker, an avid reader and collected first and second edition books and cookbooks. Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Ray and husband Jerry, Peru; two sons, Jeffrey E. Myers and wife Cynthia, Nashville, Tenn., and Franklin R. Myers and wife JoAnn, Brisbane, Calif.; five grandchildren, Erich J. Myers, Dereck W. Ray and wife Amanda, Amanda C. Bullins, Amber Hurt and husband Shannon, and Tara L. Myers; four great-grandchildren, Dalton, Nathaniel, Andrew and Jackson; and several cousins in Boalsburg, Pa. Virginia Louise Hostetler, 83, Chandler, Ariz., formerly of Peru, was welcomed into God's loving arms on April 26, 2007.
She was born January 19, 1924 in Marion to William and Mabel Lyon. On February 19, 1945 she married Robert D. Hostetler, who survives, and they celebrated over 62 wonderful years together. Virginia was a homemaker her entire life, and was very devoted to her family. She was a loving mother to two daughters: Marcia Hamblin and husband Jim of Queen Creek, Ariz.; and Roberta Dedaker and husband Nick, Kokomo; and cherished by five grandchildren, Cory West of San Diego, Calif., Beth Hamblin and Megan Hamblin, both of Queen Creek, Ariz., Brian Dedaker and wife Brandi of Bunker Hill, and Lindsay Rice and husband Nick, of Converse. She also had four great-grandchildren, Trevor and Aubree Dedaker, and Trista and Shelby Rice. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Hillsdale United Methodist Church, 4893 E. 100 North, Kokomo IN 46901.

Jeanette Lavon Miller, 85, Perrysburg, passed away at her residence at 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 17, 2007. She was born on October 17, 1921 in Urbana to Ernest and Lucille (Barker) Miller. On December 20, 1941, she married Carl Addison Miller, Perrysburg, and they had celebrated 62 years of marriage prior to his passing on April 23, 2004. Jeanette worked several years at Kuepper Favor Company in Peru, and was very proud to have made the top hats for Guy Lombardo, when he played on New Year's Eves at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. She enjoyed playing bingo, homemaking and her family.
Jeanette is survived by one son, Jimmy Miller, Peru; two daughters, Susan Bolin, Logansport, and Linda Browning and husband Stave, Peru; seven grandchildren, Mark Miller, Logansport, Kenneth Miller, Peru, Eric Arnold, Logansport, Steve Arnold, Logansport, Trisha Robbins and husband Tom, Jamie Ross and husband Fred, and Jan Browning, each of Peru; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica Short-Miller, Wyatt Miller, Aaron Arnold, Matthew Arnold, Matthew Ross, Alexander Ross, Braxten Robbins, and she was thrilled to discover that Addison Lavon Robbins will be born in a few months; one sister, Doris Smith, Marion; and two sister-in-laws, Patricia Miller and Frances Miller, both of Wabash.
Aside from her parents; and husband; Jeanette was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Miller and Keith Miller; two sisters, Josephine VanPrater and Treva Miller. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Wednesday at Skinner Worship Chapel, Twelve Mile, with Pastor Tom Robbins officiating. Burial will follow at Perrysburg Cemetery.

Ida Elizabeth Warren, 70, Pflugerville, Texas, passed away Monday, June 18, 2007. She was born Nov. 13, 1936 in Latrobe, Penn., to Clarence and Melda (Fetter) Piper. Mrs. Warren enlisted in the U.S. Navy Sept. 23, 1955, and proudly served her country. She married Jesse F. Warren June 2, 1956, in Norfolk, Va. After retirement from Civil Service, she enjoyed spending time with children and grandchildren on the Colorado River in Kingsland, Texas. She attended First Baptist Church in Pflugerville, Texas. She is survived by three daughters, Vicki L. Crouse and her husband, Mark, Marble Falls, Texas, Cindy Farris, Marble Falls, Texas, and Carol Sandlin and her husband, Lance, Pflugerville, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Jason, Ashlea, Heather, Michael, Jesse, Isaac, Free, Elizabeth, Zachary, Jackson and Aidan; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Lailyn; and her beloved dog, Little Bit. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Beck Funeral Home Chapel, Pflugerville, Texas.

Mary Lou Scott Sector, 89, Peru, passed into the Lord's hands on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at Miller's Merry Manor. She was born on April 4, 1918 in North Manchester to William and Violet Koller. Mary Lou graduated from North Manchester High School and attended beauty college in Fort Wayne. While living in Fort Wayne, she met Richard H. Scott, whom she married on August 30, 1941. Mr. Scott passed away on September 8, 1984. Mary Lou married Carl W. Sector on November 29, 1986, and he survives. She was a loving and caring wife, and mother to her three children. Dick and Mary Lou owned and operated Scott's IGA Food Center until retirement in 1981. Mary Lou was a devout and loving Christian, who was very active in the life of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she served on the Board of Trustees and several other committees, and was still active in Ester Circle of the United Methodist Women. Her other activities included a long membership in Psi iota Xi Sorority, the Miami County Symphony Unit, and the Dukes Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. When not busy with these activities, she enjoyed painting, crafts, sewing, and knitting, as well as travelling throughout the United States. She traveled to Europe, the Holy Land, Alaska and the Caribbean. Mary Lou also enjoyed gardening and grew lovely roses. She led a very full and active life. Survivors, in addition to husband Carl, are children, Martha and husband Michael Hayes, Richmond; Rich and wife Leslie Scott, Peru; Nancy Lee, Muncie; and brother Dr. Charles Koller and wife Joan of North Manchester. Her living grandchildren include Melissa Krail, Matthew Hayes, Megan Larson, Rick Scott, Rachel Sand, Aaron Scott, Adam Scott, Andy Scott, Niccole Lee, and Scott Lee. Mary was blessed with 12 great-grandchildren. First husband Richard H. Scott and son-in-law Michael Lee preceded her in death. A service celebrating her life and the passing on to the Lord's hands will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Main Street United Methodist Church in Peru with the Reverend Steven Ailes officiating, with burial to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Psi Iota Xi memorial service to follow at 8 pm. William A. Zipperian, 84, Peru, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at Norwood Health and Rehab Center, Huntington. He was born August 10, 1922 in Peru to George and Helen (Hyre) Zipperian. He married Helen West Zipperian on June 2, 1946, and she passed away on December 21, 2006. William was a retired yardmaster with the C & O Railroad. The 1941 Peru High School graduate served in World War II with the U.S. Army, participating in campaigns in Northern Solomons and Luzor. His military decorations include the WWII Victory Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, the Good Conduct ribbon and the Distinguished Unit Badge. William was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he was a past trustee, finance chairman and a member of the official board. He also served on the Maconaquah school board for several years, was a member of the Peru Planning and Zoning Commission for 12 years, was a member of the Peru Kiwanis Club and was a Red Cross Volunteer driver.
Survivors include his daughter, Candice Kaylor and husband David, Huntington; grandchildren Kari Kaylor and Kylene Jenson and husband Adam; and a brother, Phillip Zipperian and wife Joan, Peru. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, with Pastor Steve Ailes officiating and burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Military grave ide rites will be performed by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Irene V. "Winnie" White, 89, Kokomo, formerly of Peru, passed away at 6 a.m. on June 22, 2007 at North Woods Village, Kokomo, after an extended illness. She was born on January 19, 1918 in Logansport to Edward O. and Eunice P. Parker Brooks. She married Neal R. White on September 2, 1939 and he passed away on September 8, 1985. Winnie was a homemaker and an active member of Holy Trinity Anglican Catholic Church. Survivors include a nephew, Phil Brooks, Peru; a cousin, Norma Biddle, Peru; a sister-in-law, Norma Brooks, California; a half-brother, Lynn Michener, California; and several great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three brothers. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Anglican Catholic Church, Peru, with Rev. Dr. Gary A. Allbritten, 95, Martinsville, passed away at 6:19 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2007 at Morgan Hospital & Medical Center, Martinsville. He had lived in Martinsville since 1987. He was born May 21, 1912 in Calloway County, Ky. to the Rev. Francis Harley and Maggielee (Matheny) Allbritten. He married Mary Frances (Hern) Allbritten April 21, 1934, and she preceded him in death May 1, 1999. Gary moved to Indiana at an early age and attended Jackson High School in Westport, where he graduated in 1930. He then attended Franklin College, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. and the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago. On Sept. 15, 1935, Gary was ordained to gospel ministry by the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Sardinia. He served many churches throughout central and southern Indiana, including Freedom Baptist Church, Spencer First Baptist Church, Waynetown Baptist Church, Salem First Baptist Church, Peru First Baptist Church and Anderson First Baptist Church. He was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Chicago, Ill. During his ministry he was an active evangelist, holding numerous revivals throughout the Midwest and traveled to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Dr. Allbritten was currently serving as pastor emeritus of the First Baptist Church of Martinsville. He served as past president of the Indiana Baptist Convention and past president of the Baptist Homes & Hospitals of Zionsville. He was actively involved in various civic organizations during his life and was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a 50-year member of the Peru-Miami Masonic Lodge #67 in Miami County and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Robert Allbritten, Marquette, Mich., and John M. Allbritten, Martinsville; two daughters, Rebecca Hodgin, Northbrook, Ill., and Mary Kaweck, Palm Harbor, Fla.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Eve Lewter, Plainfield, Ill., and Nancy Kenady, Sedro Woolley, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; two brothers, Robert and Wade Allbritten; and a sister, Wilma Allbritten.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 1109 E. Columbus St., Martinsville.

Robert Norman McLaughlin, 85, passed away June 1, 2007 in Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Fla. He was born January 22, 1922 to Walter and Lillian McLaughlin. On April 22, 1944 he married Hazel Marie "Pat" Lipscomb and she survives. Robert graduated from Southport High School in 1940, and was a Navy pilot during World War II. Following the war, he completed degrees at Indiana Central College in Indianapolis. He worked as an insurance claims adjuster for Illinois National for 25 years, until his retirement in July of 1978. He resided in Peru from 1952 until 1992, when he moved to Tampa, Fla. He loved boating and spending time with his family. Robert is survived by his wife of 63 years; three sons - Robert Scott McLaughlin and wife Joan, Cullowee, N.C.; James Edward McLaughlin and wife Carla, Ellenton, Fla.; and Timothy Jay McLaughlin and wife Vicki, Walton, Ind; six grandchildren - Andrew McLaughlin, Minneapolis, Minn.; Jason McLaughlin and Wife Trisha, Norwich, Conn.; Mary Beth McLaughlin, Hilton Head, S.C.; Katy McLaughlin, New York, N.Y.; Robert Steven McLaughlin and wife Cassie, Flora, Ind.; and Patricia Jean McLaughlin, Walton, Ind. He is survived by three great-grandchildren, Izzabeth, Ariel and Ethan McLaughlin, of Norwich. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Walter McLaughlin and Charles McLaughlin, and a son, Chris David McLaughlin.

Michael A. Miser, 48, Mexico, passed away at 6:28 a.m. Sunday, June 24, 2007, at home with his loving wife Debra at his side. He was born in Wichita, Kan. on Oct. 13, 1958, the son of Harold and Roberta Helminger Miser. Michael married Debra Greer Aug. 27, 1994 in Mexico. Mike graduated from North Miami High School in 1977, and was employed as a millwright at Altivity Packaging (Jefferson Smurfit/Container) Wabash. Mike and Debra lovingly raised five children in a Christian home. A man of great faith, he was an active member of the Mexico Baptist Church where he has served as a Deacon. He was a devoted son, husband, father and loving grandfather, who enjoyed spending time with his family. Family activities included camping, hiking and hunting. He was an avid wood carver and made his bows and knives. An active member of the Circus City Festival, Inc., Mike devoted many volunteer hours to the organization. Survivors include his wife Debra, of Mexico; his parents, Harold and Roberta Miser, Mexico; his children, Jamie Miser and wife Laura, Denver, Matthew Birner, Mexico, Starr Rairigh and husband Justin, Mexico, Misty Baker and husband Joe, Lewisburg, and Melissa Black and husband Todd, Mexico; grandchildren Chas, Braiden, Thaddeus, Sydnee, Austin, Jayden, Kinzee, Dylan and Tyler; brothers Craig Miser and wife Lori, Indianapolis, Jerry Miser and wife Margo of Indianapolis, and Brian Miser and wife Tina, Peru. Dorothea D. "Dottie" Beigh, 81, Peru, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Forum at the Crossing Healthcare Center, Indianapolis. She was born June 19, 1926 in Auburn to Clarence and Charlotte (Hull) Walker. She was raised in the Auburn area and attended Auburn High School. She married James E. Beigh Jan. 20, 1945 in her parents' Auburn home. He preceded her in death April 22, 1987. Dottie was a homemaker and a teacher's wife, whose life revolved around helping raise their five children. As her youngest child entered high school in the early '70s, Dottie worked at Ribordy Drugs in Peru. Dottie loved to cook and enjoyed family gatherings. She devoted many hours to attending her children's school, sports and musical activities. During high school football and basketball season, she traveled with Jim to local sports events, keeping statistics for him, as he announced the games on WARU Radio. Survivors include two sons, Michael Beigh and wife Debbie, Zionsville, and Robert D. Beigh and wife Linda, Valparaiso; three daughters, Pamela J. Silverstone and husband Bruce, Trumbull, Conn., Vicki J. Peters, Indianapolis, and Patti S. Smithand and husband Roger, Amboy; seven grandchildren, Shawn A. Peters, Indianapolis, Jodi Silverstone, Boston, Mass., Geoffrey S. Smith, Plymouth, Chad A. Peters, Carmel, Adam Silverstone, Trumbull, Conn., and Matthew J. and Sarah Beigh, both of Valparaiso; a sister, Patricia McCorkle, Auburn; great aunts, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She left each of her grandchildren with many special memories of their Nanna. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers, one sister and a niece. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Hope Chapel, Peru, with Pastor J. Robert Clark officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru. Memorial contributions may be made through Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, Peru, to St. Vincent Hospice.
