MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER CHRISTMAS BY CHIP DAVIS, DECEMBER 19, 2012

LINCOLN, NEB. – The Lied Center for Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presents Mannheim Steamroller Christmas by Chip Davis, December 19. Tickets may be purchased at the Lied Center Ticket Office located at 12th and Q Street in downtown Lincoln, by phone at 402.472-4747 or online at www.liedcenter.org. Tickets for this event are very limited; prices start at $48 for adults and $24 dollars for youth.


The annual holiday tours of this famous group have become traditional events for many audiences. Mannheim Steamroller has sold over 40 million albums and Chip Davis is among an elite group of artists, having 19 gold, 8 multi-platinum and 4 platinum certified records to his credit. Such success makes it possible to forget the starting days of the ensemble when no record label would contract with it because of its unique style. Chip Davis formed his own recording label, American Gramaphone 1974. Quickly dubbed “18th Century Classical Rock”, Mannheim Steamroller established a whole new music genre.
When Chip decided to do a Christmas album in 1984, the music industry told him “It will signal the end of your career.” So he produced Mannheim Steamroller Christmas on his own, immediately selling five million copies of that first Christmas album. Since revolutionizing the sounds of Christmas, Chip has sold over 28 million Christmas albums and now has two traveling troupes to meet the demands of his annual Christmas concert tour, now in its 27th year. Chip is the #1 Christmas artist in history; the second highest Christmas artist is Elvis Presley.

Chip no longer participates as a performer because of cervical disc surgery several years ago. As he says, “What was a negative – taking me out as a performer – became a positive, allowing me to create more bands, focus on new music and go down new creative paths.” He continues to direct each and every aspect of the tour, attending as many concerts as possible.


A number of the performers have been with Chip since the very beginning of Mannheim Steamroller. Many members have been music students of the original band members; all current band members were followers of the Mannheim style in developing their careers. The connected, long-term history even includes a father/son relationship, Chuck and Logan Penington. While this is the 27th year for the tour, it continues to run at sold-out status, with cities asking for multiple performances. Last year the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour ranked among the top 20 of all concert tours in the nation.
Pre-show talks scheduled one half hour before each performance will be led by Bob Rook, director of Lincoln’s TADA Theatre. The talks, free to ticket holders, will be in the Lied Center's Steinhart Room.
