Be an Ethnomusicologist

Ethnomusicologists use the following categories to classify the different instruments found all around the world:

  • Aerophones- instruments in which sound is produced by a vibrating column of air (trumpet, flute, harmonica)

  • Chordophones- sound is produced by the vibration of strings (guitar, violin, zither, harp)

  • Idiophones- sound is produced from the vibration of the body of the instrument itself (wood block, clave, cymbals, bells)

  • Membranophones- sound is produced by the vibration of a stretched membrane (mainly drums)

Visit the following site:

Fill in the chart below by deciding which of the instruments listed on the site belong in each category. Some may fall into more than one category. On the site, you can click on the name of each instrument. It will take you to a page about the instrument, and most have a sound file so that you can listen to what it sounds like. Accurate completion of this chart will add one (1) point to your project grade.
