Contour of the Ocean Floor

Purpose:

To draw a profile of the floor of the Atlantic Ocean along the parallel of 39oN, from Cape May, New Jersey to Cape Roca, Portugal.

Background:

The table below gives figures for depths of the Atlantic Ocean from Cape May to Cape Roca along the 39th parallel. Depths are found by soundings. The echo sounder is usually used in deep waters, and the sounding line in shallow coastal waters.

Distances from Cape May in kilometers; depths of ocean in fathoms.

One fathom = 2 meters or 6 feet

1. Label this point Cape May.

2. Label these points North Atlantic Ridge.

3. Label this point Graciosa Island, Azores.

4. Label this point Cape Roca.

Materials:

  1. Graph paper

  2. Ruler

Procedure:

  1. The graph paper is marked with a horizontal scale for distance from Cape May, and a vertical scale for depths of the ocean. NOTE: that for each scale 1 small square is equal to 100.

  2. Plot all the points as shown in the table.

  3. Label the points as indicated by the footnotes.

  4. Connect every dot with a line using a ruler.

  5. Color everything below this line brown or black.

  6. Color everything above this line blue up to the line that is labeled 0 fathoms.

Questions:

  1. The continental shelf extends from the shoreline to a depth of 100 fathoms. How deep is this in meters?

  1. How wide is the continental shelf at Cape May? (distance out from Cape May)

  1. How wide is the continental shelf at Cape Roca? (distance out from Cape Roca)

_____________________________________________________________________

  1. LABEL THE CONTINENTAL SHELVES!

  2. Compare the width of the continental shelf at Cape May to the continental shelf at Cape Roca. This comparison is true of the entire east coast of North America compared to the shelf on the entire west coast of Europe.

  1. The continental slope extends from the end of the continental shelf to the ocean deeps. LABEL THE SLOPES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE OCEAN.

  2. The average depth of the world’s oceans is about 4 kilometers (or 2200 fathoms). Does your graph show an average depth close to this figure?

  1. How does it show an “average depth”? (Compare the area of sea floor above 2000 fathoms with the area below 2000 fathoms.)
