2.5 DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (DBMS)
Codd (1980) there is complex software that enables the creation, storage, access, maintenance and management of database in the computer. It consists of sets of application programs used to access, update and manage the database.

The primary goal of a DBMS is to provide a way for storage and retrieval of data in a convenient and most effective way. One of the main reasons for using the DBMS is to have control of both the data and the programs that access those data.

DBMS is responsible for:

  1. Management of large amount of data. This management involves providing a way for information storage and mechanism for information manipulation.

  2. Issuing the safety of stored information by preventing unauthorized access.

  3. Avoidance of possible anomalous results when data is to be shared among so many users.

  4. Simplifying the tasks of database design implementation, application and development.

2.5.1 Database System Application
Database systems are applicable in almost every aspect of our day to day activities. This includes:

  1. Banking: - For customers’ information, loans accounts and banking transactions.

  2. Airline: - For reservation and schedule information. The system accessed through telephone lines and other data networks.

  3. Universities: - For students’ information, courses registration and grades.

  4. Sales: - For customers, profits, loses, product and purchase information.

  5. Telecommunication: - For keeping call records and monthly bills and information storage on communication networks.

  6. Human resources: - For information about employee, salaries taxes etc.

Other areas are manufacturing, human resources, credit card transaction, finance etc.

2.5.2 Purposes of Database System
To see why database management systems are necessary, let’s look at a typical “file processing system”.
Consider a database system for the faculty of science, Katsina University, Katsina that keeps students personal information, grades etc. For us to keep this information on a computer, we need to store it in the system files. This is one way to store information.

To allow students manipulate this information, the system must have some application programs that can manipulate these files, including:

  • Program to add a new students’ record.

  • Program to generate students’ grade etc.

These tasks are left to the programmers who will write the programs to meet the faculty’s need and should be made flexible to accommodate newer changes.
For example, if the faculty wishes to add the students courses, new files need to be created so are application programs. As faculty’s need increases, more files are needed and more programs are needed to be written.
