AB - ABSTRACT: Identical present-day lead isotope compositions of whole rocks from the Mesoproterozoic Guichicovi and Oaxaca Complexes in southern Mexico and Grenville rocks from the Mesoproterozoic Santa Marta and Garzon Massifs in the Colombian Andes indicate these now widely separated Grenville-age rocks shared a U/Pb history that was distinct from Grenville-age rocks from northern and east-central Mexico, and Texas and parts of the Appalachians in the United States. The southern Mexico-Colombian rocks are characterized by a large range of (super 206) Pb/ (super 204) Pb values (17.5-24.6) and a corresponding range of (super 207) Pb/ (super 204) Pb values (15.53-16.31) that scatter along two 1,250+ or -50 Ma reference isochrons that lie above and below the average crustal growth curve. Variable Th/U values, indicated by a wide range of (super 208) Pb/ (super 204) Pb values (36.8-45.1), characterize the complexes, with rocks of the Guichicovi Complex and the Garzon Massif sharing low time-integrated Th/U values whereas the Santa Marta Massif has a tendency toward elevated Th/U values. These Pb isotopic similarities provide additional constraints to reconstructions of the pre-Pangea collisions between Gondwana and Laurentia. The Pb isotopic data, coupled with paleontologic data from unconformably overlying Early Paleozoic rocks, suggest that these Grenville-age basement blocks shared a common history in the late Proterozoic, and that they were part of Gondwana during the early Paleozoic. The southern Mexico rocks, the Oaxaca and Guichicovi Complexes, are considered to have been transferred from that part of northwestern Gondwana now occupied by Colombia to the southern tip of Laurentia during Paleozoic orogenic events related to the opening and closing of the proto-Atlantic Ocean. This model requires a major suture separating Mexico Grenville-age rock, which are considered to be offset pieces of the Grenville Province of Laurentia, from Gondwanan crust in southern Mexico; the suture must lie north of the Guichicovi-Oaxaca Complexes. The Pb isotopic data also require that the Mesoproterozoic megaterrane Oaxaquia consists of several discrete blocks assembled in the late Proterozoic(?) or Paleozoic.

AB - ABSTRACT: On January 25th, 1999, the grandfather clock at the governor's office of the Quindio Province, in Colombia, stopped clicking at precisely 13:19 hours. During the next 30 seconds more than one thousand people died under the debris of the buildings that did not resist the movement of the earth, shaken by the waves of an earthquake which shouldn't have caused such devastation. The tremor, with a calculated 6.2 magnitude, on the Richter scale, originated at a shallow depth in the vicinity of the Municipality of Cordoba, some 40 km from the city of Armenia, capital of the Province of Quindio. The proximity of the hypocenter, both in range and in depth, was evident in the high frequency predominant on the recorded seismograms and on the intensity of the vertical acceleration. Ecological damage was relatively small; however, structural damage was vast and was concentrated on south and west Armenia, and on the surrounding towns of Cordoba, Pijao, Calarca, La Tebaida, and Quimbaya. Most of the collapsed or seriously damaged structures were not provided with the seismic resistant requirements stated by the codes or, simply, were not structurally designed at all. In many cases, this was compounded with the lack of quality of both construction techniques and materials. Damage can be classified among one, or several, of the following categories: Lack of confining reinforcement, lack of sufficient longitudinal reinforcement, discontinuity of reinforcement, "trapped column" effect, diagonal tension failure in unreinforced masonry, clapping of adjoining structures. Most of the structures which were built according to the first Colombian construction code, CCCSR-84, Decree 1400 of 1984 (in Colombia, construction codes are ruled by national law through a congressional decree), or according to the current code, NSR-98, Decree 33 of 1998, behaved adequately, presenting, mainly, non-structural damage.

AB - ABSTRACT: A comparative analysis of costs about the use of electric energy, LPG, petrol and coal briquettes has been made. In order to achieve this, the energetic efficiency in relation to cooking food for each energetic source mentioned before was obtained. The costs analysis reaches the conclusion that the best option is LPG, followed by petrol, later on the two briquettes oven with fire controlled and the most expensive option is the electric energy without regarding of the socioeconomic level.

AB - ABSTRACT: This work analyses the different trends to induced oxidation of 32 coals from various places in Colombia. The experiments were carried out in a high sensitivity thermobalance and in a heater with forced air circulation. The operating conditions were: particle size: 60/100 mesh, temperature: 200 degrees C, oxidation times: 18 and 36 hours. The results show that coals from Cesar are the most susceptible to the oxidation. The oxidation grade correlates with the characteristics related to coal range (PRV and calorific value) on an almost linear form. It was found that oxidized coals had lower volatile matter content than fresh coals and the calorific value decreased significantly with the oxidation.

AB - ABSTRACT: The rationale of a simple, accurate and world-wide known method to determine the methane content in coal seams is developed in this article and the results obtained by its use at seven active coal mines in the Amaga-Angelopolis basin are presented. These results seem to confirm the long time hold idea of the low content of methane in the seams of the basin. With the exception of the seam No. 4, the methane content of the seams was around which showed higher results the content of the others was around 1 m (super 3) /t. It is likely, that during its exploitation, the seam No. 4 show a higher methane content, since it was sampled on a surface exposed for months.
