VoIP Legalized in Bangladesh

Last Monday, the Cabinet of the Bangladesh government voted to legalize VoIP in the country, at the urging of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission. ISPs in the nation have expressed a mixed reaction. They are pleased they can offer VoIP, but expect the government to impose a high licensing fee and take a share of revenues. The government plans to maintain control of the marketplace by requiring all calls to go through the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board's international gateway.

Approximately 36 VoIP service providers have been operating illegally in Bangladesh prior to this new ruling. Providers have been openly distributing calling cards throughout the country. The ISPs in Bangladesh are hoping the government will take steps to make the illegal providers meet the government's new guidelines for offering the service.

Bangladesh has a population of 130 million. There are 700,00 land lines and 1.5 million mobile phone connections.
