Physical map- shows geographic features such as mountains, lakes, deserts etc.

Political map- shows boundaries/borders of countries (man-made)

KEY / LEGEND - gives important information that helps to understand the map. (Ex. * represents capital city)

EQUATOR- 0 degree imaginary line of latitude that separates the world into a northern and southern hemisphere

PRIME MERIDIAN- 0 degree imaginary line of longitude that separates the world into a eastern and western hemisphere

compass rose-

a symbol on a compass or map that is circular with graded points for the directions showing North, South, East and West

Continents (largest to smallest)

1. Asia


2. Africa

3. North America

4. South America

5. Antarctica

6. Europe

7. Australia



Oceans

Historically, there are four named oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic.



However, most countries—including the United States—now recognize the Southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean. The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian are known as the three major oceans.
