Commodore’s Corner February 2006

Hopefully the weather will improve soon, so that it’s warm enough to start fitting out. Meanwhile there is plenty being put on in the Clubhouse to keep you busy. Prior to Easter on March 11 we have a talk on Cruising the Arctic, and then on March 25 we have New Members’ evening, together with a talk from the ever entertaining Malcolm Harding on European waterways to the Mediterranean (and back I presume). Please give both these events your support and even if not a new member, do come along to meet those who have recently joined and make them feel welcome.
Regretfully, I have to announce that Jim Clarke has stood down as our Bar Secretary: his wife Bobbie is about to retire and they want some time to travel and do things they have been planning for years. Jim has followed a line of successful Bar Secretaries but he has been inspirational in things like Guest Beers, Paninis and Olives, not to forget (and who could) his Nuts. I would like to thank him personally and on behalf of you all, for the hard work that he has put in as Bar Secretary and before that as Property Secretary, where he was the driving force behind many improvements. A special mention must be made here of the Humby Foredeck and those patio doors. Happy travel to Jim and Bobbie but hurry back, you will both be missed.
On the Bar front, Simon Everitt who has helped Jim and his predecessor Nigel Mower, has very kindly agreed to step into the breach as Bar Secretary, at least until the end of the year. Many thanks Simon.

The General Committee and the Sub Committees have over the winter, been planning for next summer by taking into account comments, rumours and anything else to try and conclude what you as members, require from their Club. In all my years on the General Committee, I think we now spend more time talking about sailing than anything else, which must be healthy. I hope you will feel when you read Jon Humby’s summary of sailing events for the year, that we are providing for everyone. (In this Circular and already on the Website). It would certainly be good to see increased participation in Club sailing events. Similarly a system of letting others know where you are off to for the weekend announced in this Circular by Rick Kirkup, will we hope, encourage in company / ad hoc cruising (of course if you like peace and solitude, then at least you will know where everyone else has gone). So I hope members will read up on this and register.

Good Friday sees not just the annual Grindle Dig, but also a working party at the Clubhouse to check masts, clear gutters and power wash the decking and canopy (amongst others). The working party is from 9:00 until about 13:00, but please contact Rick Kirkup if you are willing to help. Grindle Dig Starts at 15:00 up to 17:30. There will be the customary free pint for all those digging or working, plus bacon rolls.
Fitting out supper is on 22 April. The return slip is attached to this Circular. Please book early to ensure places.

In order to encourage a bit of a membership drive, I have challenged members of the General Committee to propose the highest number of successful membership applications and I have put up a bottle of Champagne to be presented at the AGM. It is only fair that this is extended to all members, so come on, think who might like to join the Club, propose them, get a seconder and leave the rest to the Committee. Only adult members will count, so don’t think by getting a family with eight children you can win. My decision will be final, no appeals.

On membership, I know that a few people have been concerned that the Classic Sailing Club based at Pin Mill, appears to be offering its members automatic membership of our Club. Let me assure you this is not the case. The normal application process and General Committee consideration, is still very much in place.
It just remains to wish you a good fitting out season and hope that the events we are organising will tickle your fancy.
