1597. Illinois). PICTURESQUE FREEPORT Freeport and Vicinity. Freeport: W. H. Wagner & Sons, Printers and Binders, 1900. First Edition. Book. Original edition, actual publication year unknown, probably before 1900, possibly 180s. Oblong string tied dark gray wraps, about 7 1/2" x 9 x 1/2". Illustrated with half-tones of public buildings & homes in Freeport, Illinois. Stated is "Photographs by Wareham. Grouping by Bolender." On the "net" is the following information on J. L. Wareham. "John L. Wareham - photographer, Obituary in 1879 he returned to Freeport and became one of the leading photographers of this city. The picture industry at that early date was at the "tin type" stage and it was necessary for him to make his own dry plates for making pictures. Of recent years he has been doing much of the commercial photography for factories and railroads in this vicinity. (Jan. 31, 1930 Freeport Journal Standard)." There was also a photographer, C. H. Wareham, about the same time. I believe that the best known of the two, J. L., is the likely author. Freeport is in Stephenson County & was the site of the famous Abraham Lincoln - Stephen Douglas second presidential candidate debate. This rare copy in fair condition because: An applied cover photo is missing, and the front cover is torn vertically at the top of just inside the binding corner & then angles diagonally. Tear goes down the cover 4 1/2". Else good condition. 29 total leaves with photos on one side of 27. Title page. Two page print material, "Freeport, Illinois". The pages are in great shape. Curiously, threre is a reverse printing of the title page on the verso, and the type of the second of the two page information leaf shows through on the recto, somewhat competing with the type on the recto. We have chosen not to even professionally repair this copy, deferring to what the eventual owner will want to do. This book is truly rare and research shows that copies are found only in three libraries worldwide. (#SHEL565) $270.00

1600. Illustrated London). ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, THE. ILN, London, 1856, 1856. First Edition. Book. Original edition, Jan 5, 1856 (beginning at page 3) - June 28, 1856. Folio in cloth & printed on quality paper. Gorgeous military (cavalry, naval, etc.) & other engravings throughout, many double page. A handful are in sepia tone. Four portraits are strongly tinted, with particular note on a very striking portrait, "The Standard Bearer" (J.Gilbert). We mention just a handful of noteworthy engravings: "The Peers Front - New Palace of Westminster", two full page engravings on the "Burning of Covent Garden", a terrific double page: "Peace on Earth Good Will Towards Men -- Cry Havoc and Let Slip The Dogs Of War", "New Uniforms of the British Cavalry", "New Uniform of the Coldstream Guards", numerous striking fireworks engravings celebrating the peace, also "The Peace Rejoicing -- Ringing The Bells", "The New State Ball-Room At Buckingham Palace", one-third page engravings of "The Nebraska and Kansas Territory". 1601. Illustrated London). ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, THE. ILN, London, 1892, 1892. First Edition. Book. Original edition. Three months of the Illustrated London News, Oct 1, 1892, through the end of the year. Folio. Poor condition with all pages stained. However, even with the staining of the prints and pages, this large folio volume should not be relegated to oblivion. There is much attention given in words & illustrations to the life and passing of England's great poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who had just died. There is the complete, serialized novel by Thomas Hardy, "The Pursuit of the Well-Beloved", with the interesting masthead for each of the twelve segments. Advertising and art work are classic Victorian and endlessly fascinating. Be warned now, condition: The first 2/3 of the volume are heavily stained on the upper portion of the leaves, and the last 1/3 is heavily and dreadfully stained also on the bottom half. This is not a tea or coffee stain, but of a substance somewhat oily in texture that is still just a touch noticeable. The binding is poor & the first blank page is torn. A couple of other pages have a long tear, & a few pages were stuck together in small (dime to half-dollar) sized spots. They have been carefully separated with some minor print loss and some short tears. The volume is what it is, and someone will enjoy it, or break it & pick the best of the plates for framing.
