True first cloth bound edition. 480pp. Profusely illustrated with wood engravings and other types of print images, some double spread, some single page, and some multiple images on a page. The title page continues: "Most Important Events of the Conflict Between the States graphically pictured. Stirring Battle Scenes and Grand Naval Engagements, drawn by special artists on the spot. Portraits of Principal Participants, Military and Civil; Famous Forts; Pathetic Episodes, Etc., Etc. the whole forming An Authentic Pictorial History of the War, by such well-known artists as (extended list) with an introduction by Joseph B. Carr, Major-General. Condition: Re-backed with almost the entire original cloth retained over a new spine -- small loss to original cloth at spine ends. Otherwise original covers and endpapers with new binding that has tightened the text block and made this copy ready for another one hundred years of reference and enjoyment to the collector and researcher. Some pages have a few very short edge tears. There are four sequential leaves that inexplicably have chipped edges but the chips do not affect the images or text on those pages. There is a very handsomely written ownership signature & date in broad pencil on a blank preliminary page, "April 1, 1895 William K. Hayes Bridgeport, Conn." Gilt on the cover is very good. There is some general wear & the right edge area of the front cover is darker than the rest of the cover. The rear cover has considerable old moisture stain/bleaching, and thus is compromised visually, but is clean and stable. Very scarce now in the first edition. (#0811097) $465.75

The clipping (taped , not glued) on the verso is an obituary of Lindsay's widow. Another clipping, folded, is a eulogy of Lindsay, himself. Pictorial endpapers. 8 line inscription on front blank page to Mrs. Elliott Todhunter Dewey, "who has introduced so many authors so beautifully..." signed & dated by Linford in early 1948. Another owner's signature top of front blank page. Affixed to verso of ffep is a very attractively printed pictorial promotional folder for the book. Includes bio of Linford, chapters in the book, etc. Linford studied under a famous group of historians: Grace Hebard, LeRoy Hafen, Frederic Paxson, & Herbert Bolton. This book was a textbook for 7th - 9th graders, but it was written & published in a time when that age group had meaty material to study, & this one is not only meaty, but engagingly written. Railroads, Gold seekers, Yellowstone, Johnson County War & Tom Horn, Indians, Missionaries, Ranching & Ranchers, etc.. Rare bookman & publisher, Fred Rosenstock published this book &, as Linford acknowledges, "permitted me to use his library of rare volumes and to reproduce rare items from his personal collection."
